Chemotaxis. Math. Computers. Cells. Machine learning.

You also used to be able to to block it by inserting the word "fucking" into every question you asked google, but they seem to have fixed that now

I get extraordinarily depressed by the standards of reasoning used in my field. Circular arguments everywhere. Bald statements that are plainly fallacious. Dominant active mutations used to prove something is "key". Knockouts of A used as evidence that A "controls" B. What to do? It's everywhere...

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

This is a story in which *everyone* save some of the original investigators was operating in profound bad faith: Arday, the institutions, the racists who took up his case and made it a story, the media as a whole. Obviously the institutional failure is bigger than one tragically disturbed man.

Showing passers-by the eclipse projected down 2x poster tubes into a slide box. Once we got past "who are these mad scientists with contraptions made from cardboard boxes and tinfoil" we had lots of takes! Especially kids. Science is always cool.

Dear fellow researchers. I think we need to discuss this: www.newscientist.com/article/2532... While peer review is flawed, and while preprints are a great way to share data before publication, as a community we mustn’t trade rigour for hype. This paper was peer reviewed and rejected.

What is 'SpudCell'? Arguably the greatest bioengineering feat yet

A prototype cell partly capable of replicating itself has been created using 36 existing bacterial genes, but it's not really a living organism – yet
