The end of an era - After almost a century we said goodbye this morning to our great companion of the airwaves Radio 4 198 LW. I shall miss her warmth and crackle. Here’s the final sign off at the end of #theshippingforecast before she fell silent… ❤️
Looking forward to this! I use voxtype a lot. I wish it was a bit faster perhaps this will be?
Canonical have announced Myna. Local speech-to-text dictation for #Ubuntu Desktop, landing in 26.10. Press a shortcut, talk, watch the words appear. Runs on your machine, no audio leaves it. Named after the bird that mimics human speech. Of course it is. discourse.ubuntu.com/t/introducin...
Moltbot And The Prompt Worms? I think I saw them open the Cambridge Folk Festival in '92.
I once found this very touching inscription in a book: “This book belongs to Gillian Love, aged 7 8 10 12 60”
The @latenightlinux.bsky.social team at @ubuntu-ls.bsky.social Summit 25.10. It was a privilege to have been invited. No doubt we’ll have a round up in the next few weeks, suffice to say lots of genuinely exciting things happening with Ubuntu. #ubuntusummit2510
@8none1.org I just heard your comment about voice being the future of typing in a recent LNL episode. And I agree 100%. That's why I built github.com/zugaldia/spe..., which I've been using daily for most of my typing for months now. Feedback/contributions always welcome.

“We learned a lot about the Moon, but what we really learned was about the Earth.” Jim Lovell, who guided Apollo 13 safely back to Earth, has died aged 97. His bravery was second-to-none but I loved him for his sense of wonder, and his willingness to let that show. RIP www.bbc.com/news/article...

Just went for a walk and listened to A Life Well Wasted ep 9. Now to viciously carve 15 minutes out of it….
I got a Ring doorbell. The internet would have you believe it’s great. Hardware seems ok. The management app and web app are fucking atrocious. Anyone who says different is a liar.
Robert “Ed” Smylie, the NASA official who saved the Apollo 13 crew in 1970, has died at 95. He cobbled together an apparatus made of cardboard, plastic bags and duct tape after an explosion crippled the spacecraft as it sped toward the moon. nyti.ms/3Sbusb3

This post is for my developers out there, web and otherwise. We have super powers. We can make something functional from practically nothing. And you know what…

This feels a bit seedy from @firstdirect.bsky.social. Encouraging me to take on debt, to spend money that isn’t mine. Sadly very cash money of them.
📻 Amateur radio shaped modern tech, from satellites to the internet. Yet, much of its history is at risk of being lost forever. 🕳️ #VanishingCulture Why does this matter? ➡️ https://blog.archive.org/2025/01/14/vanishing-culture-digital-library-of-amateur-radio-and-communications/
Spending the evening playing cards with the family. We’re currently playing a cross between Hoover and Eight Men Down.
IKEA have stopped selling non-rechargeable batteries for ecological reasons. This means no more Platboj. These CR2032 coin cells were, I think, about 10 pence each. All the ones on Amazon are around FIVE times the price! What are people using?
This is a very accurate very long very good description of how I feel about what’s happened to the web/apps which endeavour to replace the web.
Newsletter: Our digital lives are unregulated growth-hacked ecological disasters. The modern tech ecosystem's growth-at-all-costs mindset is actively harming billions of people, pushing them toward authoritarianism for profit. We must fight back. www.wheresyoured.at/never-forgive-them/
The internet was supposed to have been the champion of mankind's achievements, wise protector of human knowledge, but instead it became the greatest unreliable narrator in all of fiction.
Paying for the Dartford crossing. Who wrote this?? I admit, I left home early this morning and my brain isn’t really working properly but this is just gibberish. “Late payments will be used for future crossings” - fucking WHAT?

I gave a talk on #Elite at hack::soho last year, and the video’s now available. It's a whirlwind tour of 3 fascinating aspects of Elite: procedural generation, 3D maths & the split screen. Gosh, I talk quickly when I’m having fun! 🤣 youtu.be/J10vYqqE6oI?... #retrocomputing #retrogaming #bbcmicro

My internet was been going out at about the same time for the past couple of weeks. Tracked it down to a WiFi smart bulb which had decided to use the same IP address as my DNS server.
