I talk about it less on here but among the other dozen or so things I do, I am also a board member for my local cultural heritage society. It's hard work, but I am proud of it. We had a successful community event yesterday and my back hurts but I'm happy.

How does observing the already accurately reported role of privilege in the creative industries relate to the margin-frame? What do a half-dozen white 'authors' admitting to AI in their 'craft' really reveal about the ways Blackness, queerness, disability, and more are framed in literary culture, other than the usual tragedies?

I would argue that the tragedies we know are vital to the issue. The margin-frame is, at its core, about what 'The Marginalised' are able to get away with — about policing the amounts of curiosity or confrontation is allowed from them, but also about policing how empowered they are to transgress in the same ways as their peers. As we've learned, when an author of colour is assumed to break the taboo of authenticity, they either lose opportunities or witness the entire spaces they've creatively occupied crumble under the weight of their misbehaviour. A white author simply locks their comments and moves on without another thought, confident that either the future will absolve them or there is still enough incentive in the present to ignore the consequences. It is useful, then, to observe what the mechanically 'unframed' can get away with, and how they do, and by what means.

But there is more to the colony of the unframed that is outside of our witness. If the purpose of the margin-frame is to allow the industry to tell us what is true about ourselves, and these machines have simply been empowered to regurgitate those biases back to us, then what is happening outside of that box that we are not allowed to see? What else are we not being permitted or excused to do?

In the more saccharine sense: we are not excused to experience the curiosity inherent to our efforts. Not only as creators, but as othered persons, we are not free to see further than the edge of our bodies — than the frame itself. In its own way, these tools create a paradox where racialised, gendered, and other othered bodies are expected to imagine, to care, to prove that we are capable of imagining above our station but caring deeply only about that station, and yet paradoxically imagining or caring too much, about too many other things — about bodies and lives and truths and worlds that are not our own, about things that can crack the seams of the frame — is not something the structure has made room for. If one of the curses of the margin-frame is that the creative world isn't actually curious what other stories or imaginations The Marginalised have in them other than the ones that the frame can hold, then it also matters that dozens of majority creators are significantly empowered to imagine and care as little as possible, and less with each new and empowering technology, to not even think about what the plot of their story is or the interiority of their characters, to not even look at it until a machine has been through it every time.

One reason why the industry loves catering to the margin-frame is because even (and often especially) if the text itself needs work, they can care as little as possible about the editing, practice, or other effort required to get the text there if they can sell the seasoning of it. One easy way to do so is to market the work as the effort of an unrecognised savant, someone unpractised and unpolished who nevertheless has a work of staggering genius on their hands. If that agent or that editor works the story, then they get to say they're the gatekeeper who found the David waiting underneath all that marble and chipped away everything that wasn't the novel. But if they don't, then the story is even strangely sweeter — the story of a delicacy of a novel, so allegedly perfect even while raw that they dare not risk overcooking it instead. You get Richard Wright's Black Boy, or you get Amos Tutuola's The Palm-Wine Drinkard. Nothing in between.

The alleged proliferation of generative AI in the industry then makes for a very convenient scapegoat. When things are going well, apparent dozens of readers and professionals have no problem giving the work their stamp of approval, and are infinitely curious about what may be so daring about the manuscript. As soon as external suspicion may affect their own reputation, though, suddenly they always had doubts, and those doubts were always serious enough to warrant pulling out. They were perfectly fine selling seemingly flat prose, cliché or off-kilter similes, or rough sentence structure when it was part of the inter-industry story of plucking a diamond-in-the-rough Black author out of obscurity and giving them the spotlight they deserve. When the heat is on, they go right back to having no room on the roster for them — especially if the alternative was to actually do the work to steward that writer's craft.
