The eclipse ended, but the daylight did not return. Neighbors lit their porch lamps. By evening someone had watered the shadows. By morning, they'd grown. By the third night we were leaving small offerings on porches, and the moon, we agreed, seemed to be considering them. #HorrorWritersChat

Themes, I'd say. Some are very obvious, right on the surface. Others will be obscured til the ending. Some, you might never notice. You might even excavate a few that I've unconsciously hidden from myself. I want this to be a work of many, many layers. We'll see if I pull it off. #HorrorWritersChat

The novel I'm working on is set in pioneer Florida c. 1906–1912, so the heat is almost a character. I think that to avoid it being background, it has to be described through viscerally through hot it affects human characters. I also try to give it a subtle intimation of agency. #HorrorWritersChat

Probably the crossroads demon because this archetype shows up a lot in the blues and in the folklore of West Africa and the American South. The Cenobites are a modern example. I also like trickster figures who cause havoc to no discernible objective. #HorrorWritersChat

Oh, all sorts of things. In one tale, it's a bizarre situation involving a stapler. That's the one I'm most proud of; I wrote a story in which the objects of horror are mundane office supplies. #HorrorWritersChat

I'll go with Mary Butts (1890-1937). Her work isn't well known because it's quite avant-garde, but she gave us "Speed the Plow" (1923), one of the most truly shocking stories ever written. She also wrote excellent pamphlets critiquing rationalism. #HorrorWritersChat

Probably Poe's "Berenice" because it was the first thing that really shocked me. I was 10 or 12 when I read it. It made me realize that horror literature was a world without boundaries. #HorrorWritersChat

Oh, I'd rather not. There were two sequels already. The first of them is pretty good. I think that some of the spirit of the original is present in many of my stories, but I never consciously emulate anything. #HorrorWritersChat

Creature from the Black Lagoon I think is fundamentally about destructive hubris and how humanity brands violation as "discovery" and the unknown as monstrous. I return to this theme again and again. #HorrorWritersChat
