Be sure to check out this whole thread to see what the spooky folks of Bluesky's #HorrorWritersChat have been up to!
Thanks for the scare and care time, folks! After you’ve answered the questions and interacted, it’s time to self-promote! Share your promo with the hashtag #HorrorWritersChat IN THE COMMENTS on this post. Like and quote post your fellow frighteners' promo posts to show you care.
My go-to favorite is We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. I re-read at least part of it every October. But another early delight for me was Jane-Emily by Patricia Clapp. I still have a thing about gazing balls to this day. #HorrorWritersChat
Shout out your favourites. Q4: #HorrorWritersChat - Who do you read for a guaranteed scare? Share the name of the horror writer you read for a scary time OR share a scary story that has stayed with you. @ the writer if they’re here. --- OUTRO in 10 mins.
I don't know what others would consider my scariest words, but I chilled myself with "What I Know Now," the bloodiest thing I've yet written. The idea of needing to take down someone you love? And the ambivalence of whether that's true or only in my narrator's mind? (shudder) #HorrorWritersChat
It’s your time to scare. Q3: #HorrorWritersChat - What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever written? Share a pull quote OR let us know which of your works you consider the scariest and why. No covers or links! Not until the outro 😊
I'm not as young as I once was…still haven't found a cursed painting or vampire friend to help with that, so mostly I worry about getting everything I want done. More ideas than I'll likely have time to develop, you know? #HorrorWritersChat
Let’s get personal. Q2: #HorrorWritersChat - What scares you about your career in horror writing? Examples: In-person events. Marketing. Having work stolen. Or something else? Fellow Horror Writers - show you care and comment with your helpful suggestions on tackling these scares. #HorrorSky
Hi there #HorrorWritersChat I'm Samantha and I write short horror in a variety of subgenres. I see scary things all the time…I mean, I drive on the highway! The foolishness there scares me because it puts your mortality right there in side view mirror.
Welcome to the Chat, Horror Writers! This week, we're talking about what scares YOU. Q1: #HorrorWritersChat - Introduce yourself and the horror you write. Then, share something scary that you recently saw/read that wasn’t a fictional horror story. Why did it scare you?
August was not a very impressive month for word count, but there's still a lot to do in a writing life even when you can't create new work. samanthabwriter.substack.com/p/going-indi...

Today is my grandmother and great-grandmother's birthdays…and the death anniversary of my grandmother (like Shakespeare, she died on her birthday like the legend she was). Here we all are in ridiculous matching dresses my mother made for us all.
Sorry I couldn’t come play #HorrorWritersChat today, but we can all still check out the outro to find out what everybody’s up to.
#HorrorWritersChat Outro: Thanks so much for indulging me, everyone! After you’ve answered the questions & interacted with other posts, it’s PROMO TIME! COMMENT on this post with your self-promotion & use the hashtag. I'll be reposting comments tomorrow, to maximize visibility of everyone's work!
Got up early to take a walk with my daughter before she had to go to work. Besides the time with her, I was rewarded with mushrooms!
I'll be guest-hosting #Horrorwriterschat today at 7pm BST (UK) / 2PM EDT (USA)! Bring your creepies and your crawlies, your spooks and your scares! #HorrorSky #AmWriting #Horror #AuthorSky #Horrorbooks #Horrorwriters
Somebody else was up early in my neighborhood today! Such a beauty!
Had to buy an umbrella because I vended at an event that didn't have room for the usual canopy tent. Look how well my new umbrella matches my banner! Guess it was meant to be. #writerlife
Crepe myrtle buds in my yard. Feels like a reminder to slow down and give myself time to bloom.

Sorry folks got waylaid here with human stuff! Meterorites happening is playing havoc with the brain. Please, promo, delightfully! #HorrorWritersChat
#HorrorWritersChat Did I miss the outro? Oh well, thank you all for another great and inspiring chat. Write all the things!
The sun hung cartoon yellow, though its light never reached us. "Impossible," the astronomer told CNN. We later learned he parked in his garage with the car running, door closed. The nightbirds met the daybirds, sang, shreiked, mated. You wouldn't want to meet their children. #HorrorWritersChat
#HorrorWritersChat microfic prompts never fail to make me proud. I love what you do with them! Q3. Roll your sleeves up, horror bods. You know you want to. Let's try again, and thank you for the tag! I'd say I need new glasses but I only just picked them up. Eep.
Rosie screamed. Had someone cursed her, like she'd always feared, or was the darkness affecting everyone? She knocked on the door she was about to deliver 🍕 too. "Is it dark for you too?" The person nodded grimly. "Yes. Father Sun is gone. Mother is here." Their eyes, dark. #HorrorWritersChat

As a pantser, the whole process is discovery and surprise for me. I write to find out what the story is, then rewrite to make it something others can enjoy :-) #HorrorWritersChat
Last question before the outro, and the promo... Thanks to those who waited, and to those who ignored my instructions... Anyway. #HorrorWritersChat I have another question for you. One that might suit the pantsers more than the planners, today!
#HorrorWritersChat Q3: The world lay quiet for a moment. Scientists had theories, politicians laid blame, but their voices failed to fill the void. Hush broke way to the chorus of riot. One last blood siege on the cold. Bodies bleeding, frozen in the endless night. Then silence reigned.

There were ancient stories, fears, legends from people in other places and long forgotten times that believed that the stars were holes in the black velvet of night through which another world shone through. They were right. God help us, they were right. And it was horrible. #HorrorWritersChat

Bette removed her glasses, squinting warily at the stubbornly dark sky. She turned the knob on the radio and the static grew louder. Tears slid down her cheeks as she rubbed her arms, calculating how long they still had. #HorrorWritersChat

I'm currently writing a Gothic romance, all about secrets revealed. What fun would it be if I revealed them here before I even finish the book? But the hope is that my readers will make assumptions that I won't correct until the story moment is right to reveal the truth. #HorrorWritersChat
Q2 #HorrorWriterschat What do you hide in your WIP, when you're being more sophisticated than me of late and not just putting it out there in a gothic way...
Zombies, vampires, and "coming back wrong" = resurrection horror. Have you read these stories recommended by #HorrorWritersChat attendees? If you write horror and love sharing your fave horrors, join us on Bluesky every Wednesday for four themed questions and a promo opportunity. #HorrorSky
Hi #HorrorWritersChat ! I'm Samantha, multigenre writer. I write short horror, mostly for themed anthologies, in a variety of subgenres. I'm not sure I'd actually be unsettled by either of these…more just fascinated. I'd find a roof or a mountain to watch from either way.
Greetings, mortals, those of you who are not out enjoying the eclipse, of course. Welcome to #HorrorWritersChat. Q1 is here. Leave your links and your promo to the end, thanks thanks. Now is for talking.
Looking for me? Here’s where you can find me the rest of August. #AuthorLife #BookEvents
Guys! Did I show you my mushrooms? Because I live in North Carolina which is one of the most fungus-tastic places in America. And we got a bunch of rain and I did a terrible job cleaning up my leaves last fall and my reward is all these mushrooms!
