Take two classrooms, both using the same fundamental idea to communicate a mathematical concept (like volume). Then, modify the presentation to students in a few very small ways. Tweak your examples, and your task sets. The result:

When students don’t grasp something, we often assume it’s about effort, ability, or attention. But in many cases, the real issue is our instruction. If a process can be interpreted in multiple ways, students will interpret it differently, and some of those interpretations will be wrong by chance.

I have been spending lots of time on curriculum design and curriculum-making recently, but for teachers at a classroom level this becomes entwined with instructional design.
