A pupil can reach the expected standard through strong arithmetic with relatively little success in reasoning and problem solving. But can they apply, reason, justify, challenge ideas and think critically? There’s a big difference between doing mathematics and using mathematics.
if the decisions we make prevent students from studying maths past 16 then we reduce the potential pool of future maths teachers.
If you have centralised resources that must be adhered to w/out deviation, are there opportunities for staff to craft learning in your school? or is this a skill you have to learn when you get a TLR? Or is this overlooked?

This is infuriating. Over the past ten or so years we have seen a marked decline in portion size. 6'2 teenagers getting tiny plates that are barely a snack. Fix that before this moral hand-wringing over what they're eating. www.theguardian.com/education/20...

I’m pretty sure that by 1981 the government had stopped telling me what 2/6 was in new pence I think it shows 9-1 grades haven’t worked and they need to be ditched; only five grades are needed anyway

went to an fa cup extra preliminary round replay yesterday evening (ashby ivanhoe beat worcester raiders 3-1) andon reflection it is so cool that we have a competition where this match contributes to what will eventually be multi-million £££ match at wembley
So we end up with a situation where UK outperforms most of its peers on education, but rather than that making everyone happy it makes everyone angry that they put in the work, acquire the skills, and end up with crap outcomes, often worse than their parents. Full piece: www.ft.com/content/1c4a...

I really enjoyed this history of queuing, particularly the bit where they got rid of loads of queues and didn't have anything for people to do when they weren't queuing... an illusion of freedom!
