Head of maths, head full of maths. In the corner of the fox county.

A pupil can reach the expected standard through strong arithmetic with relatively little success in reasoning and problem solving. But can they apply, reason, justify, challenge ideas and think critically? There’s a big difference between doing mathematics and using mathematics.

If you have centralised resources that must be adhered to w/out deviation, are there opportunities for staff to craft learning in your school? or is this a skill you have to learn when you get a TLR? Or is this overlooked?

Ash, Blur, The Cure and Daft Punk decide to go on tour. They play 4 different venues, Aberdeen, Belfast, Cardiff and Dorking. Each night they rotate their venues, so Ash play in Aberdeen the first night and Belfast the next and so on... Daft Punk start in Dorking then go to Aberdeen and so on...

Went to the Escher exhibition today at Somerset House. Went to the wrong entrance by mistake, so had to go down the stairs. And down the stairs again. And again. And again. I'm sure it's a good exhibition! I'll get there one day, I'm sure! #MCEscherUK #mathsky

I really enjoyed this history of queuing, particularly the bit where they got rid of loads of queues and didn't have anything for people to do when they weren't queuing... an illusion of freedom!

New JHM! The July 2026 issue includes an article by a student I taught for whom this was her grade 11 independent research project: scholarship.claremont.edu/jhm/vol16/is... She explored an area of #mathematics called "queueing theory" and wrote all about it in the context of Disney! #iTeachMath ♾️
