"ALRIGHT MEN, LET'S STOP THIS FIRE!" #SciArt doodle of the @firebrigademusical.bsky.social performance we had this week at @sangerinstitute.bsky.social, it was such a joy looking forward to see what the musical will look like once it is out of "early access" and out on the big stage!

I love connecting people. Trained as a microbiologist, I now write about all types of science. Super serious about my daily coffee ritual. Native Oregonian. Views expressed are my own.
On Thursday I had the most wonderful work afternoon - The @firebrigademusical.bsky.social performed live on our Campus. 🎶 I was agog for the entire 90 minutes; I left fired up to learn more about @girtoncollege.bsky.social of the past! 🗳️ Lastly: @jennipinnock.com your music is out of this world! 🎹
Eczema is a complex, chronic condition affecting millions worldwide. 🌏 For Eczema Awareness week, read our blog to explore what we know about eczema and what the future of research could look like. 👉 https://sangerinstitute.blog/2026/07/01/5-questions-on-eczema-with-anna-vathrakokoili-pournara/
5 questions on eczema with Anna Vathrakokoili Pournara - Wellcome Sanger Institute Blog

New research suggests that the risk of developing bacterial pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis after air pollution exposure could depend on the subtype of bacteria a person has. Read the full story ⤵️
Bacteria in airway shape air pollution health risk
By studying over 59,000 cases of invasive disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, experts have found that the subtype of bacteria influences the impact of environmental factors, such as air pollution, on disease risk.

When I hear drug resistance, my first thought as a microbiologist is #AMR. But, that's not the only type of drug resistance out there. Our researchers are looking into cancer drug resistance, and studying healthy cells response to chemotherapy. New story written by my colleagues now live ⤵️
Cancer treatments give a growth advantage to cells with particular genetic changes in healthy tissue. New research provides insights into chemotherapy side effects and drug resistance 💊 Read more ⤵️ https://www.sanger.ac.uk/news_item/chemotherapy-alters-darwinian-battleground-in-our-bodies/

Attended #SAGE2026 about two weeks ago in Phuket. Presented my ongoing work on the evolutionary ecology and genomics of H. diekei adaptive radiation and met my friends and many other Indonesians and scientist working on evolution in Southeast Asia. Time well spent and of course very delicious food.
It has rained for a second night in a row here in Cambridge; thankful for that much needed moisture and temperature drop. As my mother-in-law put beautifully: "You can feel the small green things breathe". Here's a chunky caterpillar (not green) spotted yesterday on campus. Buff tip?
A week ago, we landed back in the UK after a quick trip to my home. Two weeks filled with family, fun, and an excess of food. We didn't get out into the wilderness, and yet, on a walk around Portland I spotted my first Woodland Skipper. This was an unexpected joy; the buggy highlight of the trip.
