Oh FFS!! Stop regurgitating press releases from AI companies and taking their claims as gospel!! Validate their claims! Yes IoT devices are insecure but can they run an AI model? Probably no. Do they retain persistence? No. Will criminals use AI models over current scripts, e.g. Mirai? No.

Anthropic has said its experiments suggested small AI models may be months away from being capable enough to self-replicate on commercial Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, such as smart ovens and off-brand Android TV boxes.

This Gist got much less love than usual in terms of links, but I think it is one of those that stands for longer than the more topical ones around it. (It got less love, because I sent it on a Thursday and The Gist readership is made of very busy people) www.thegist.ie/the-gist-on-...

The Gist: On (and On) Bullshit

I have been thinking about Bullshit, in its official categorisation. In his short and easy essay “On Bullshit”, the euphoniously-named American philosopher Harry J. Frankfurt posited that a person co...

This is an interesting screwup by the Mad King. With Gulf of Mexico wasn’t something that people globally were saying daily. Inaccurate as Artificial Intelligence is as a phrase it’s in common use globally. None of us give a flying feck what the deranged baboon says & his weakness will be visible

So there is a local campaign in Dun Laoghaire against the living streets plan. Called S.A.O.R. Save all our roads.... The plan voted through a few years ago. So a leaflet on it comes through the letterbox today. No note on who its from but it has a QR code which I scan. And takes me to an Aontú 1/2

you don’t hold "AI" accountable; you hold AI developers, vendors, and corporations that profit off it accountable holding "AI accountable" is like holding a toaster accountable. it's an inanimate object. it doesn't have wishes, feelings, or desires

In the authoritarian mind, society is deeply and intrinsically hierarchical. Either they're above you, or you're above them. Either they have the liberty, or you have the liberty. You can't both have it.

In the next hour teachers across the country will send about a bajillion emails before the work to rule formally starts. It’s quite likely with emails on pause teachers stress will go down and time with students improve

Flippancy aside, failing to examine that is precisely the failure of AI discourse (and much tech discourse before). How to delegate without losing agency is the core question of automation. Fucking it up means missing everything from dynamics of power to the virtuous life.

This quote is great because of how neatly it captures the idea of "leisure as liberation." As problematic as it is unexamined. Biologists have a special word for the state of being liberated from the need to act. They call it "dead."

The next five graphs are even less convincing, and the argumentation becomes even weaker. It was almost impossible for me to imagine how a seemingly intelligent person could have written it—but I found a secret clue buried in the text itself.

A.I. has the potential to enhance the way we live in the same way. It saved me and my colleague, Will McGrew, many hours of prowling the internet to research this essay. That left us with time to do other tasks.

Why do fascists hate art? Art asks you to step into another's shoes, to consider what the artist was trying to express and to understand who they are. Art is, above all, an act of humanity, a shared moment of vulnerability, a request for empathy, sympathy and compassion. That's why they love AI
