For those of you with day jobs where you're forced to use LLMs or be fired, good tip I gleaned this weekend, which is to tell the LLM to stop referring to itself using "I" pronouns and to eliminate the praise and other attempts to humanize itself. You get a much cleaner interaction w/o the marketing

One could argue that as the most widely read genre, romance is most deserving of care and attention, a refusal to concede to bland extruded text from the Average Intelligence machine. The potential to reach the greatest number of readers with your art, with your intellect, can be through romance.

What the fuck, Joyce. I don’t even read romance novels but this kind of thinking pisses me the fuck off. It further pushes that mentality that some books as “lesser” which is bullshit! All books count!

Joyce Carol Oates
This is why Al-generated romance novels make perfect sense. Formulaic fiction doesn't need to be written by hand, so to speak; what difference does it make if a machine "writes" it? There are machine-made clothes & there are custom-made clothes. They appeal to different consumers.

Jim Henson would have been 90 (yup, you read that right: NINETY) years old today. You can celebrate his life by celebrating creativity, diversity, peace, imagination, and silliness.

A tuxedoed Jim Henson sits in a sea of Muppets.

This video is an exceptional work that explains what not supporting Rowling really looks like - and why you don't want to even drop sarcastic or ironic references to it until such time as it has long been public domain and Rowling only a figure taught about in social science classes.

Autumn has well and truly started, and in one month’s time we’ll light our candles and tiptoe through the shadows for 13 days and nights of Spooktastic Reads in the run up to Hallowe’en. Are you ready to explore the darker side of fantasy?

the rest of us can only do what we always do: make our own decisions on who to trust and how to best spend what money we can spare in this one lifetime we spend in this hell world. for instance, you could set up a recurring monthly donation to the Sameer Project today. chuffed.org/project/help...

Just learned that Category Is Books, a lovely queer bookshop in Glasgow, has been targeted by transphobic violence, & is fundraising to cover the costs of a smashed window & roller shutters. I hate that they have to do this & would love to see them meet their goal.

NEW VIDEO ALERT! Today on Bar Cart Bookshelf we're talking about THE EVERLASTING by Alix E. Harrow. A time looping fantasy of ferocious lady knights & the nervy chain-smoking scholars who love them: folklore amid fascism. Fierce, clever, & impassioned. Our drink is Valiance, beneath the yew tree.
