probably my favorite activity I did this summer semester was my tie-dye universe activity! students learn about how early universe quantum fluctuations became large-scale structure—then, using the real wavelengths of their “cosmic visible background” they measure their CVB freeze-out temperature

my own tie-dye shirt from the activity. it is blue, pink, and purple

ok this is kind of out of my wheelhouse science-wise but what exactly is it about nebulae and other deep space objects that causes us to perceive them as beautiful? we didn’t evolve looking at anything like them (clouds maybe?), so like… what’s up with that?
