How Austerity is Killing Higher Ed (and What We Can Do About It)

Recently, at the end of a particularly bruising year, another professor and I found ourselves loitering together, draped in our bright and preposterous academic regalia, amid a long line of similar…

The kind of class that is increasingly only available at places like Harvard - not because students at public universities aren't clamoring for it (they are) but because public universities are treated as a site for disciplining future workers, not educating people to be free.

“At Harvard, students are clamoring for a class that assigns a hefty book a week, requires regular essays, bans digital devices. Humanities 10 drew 180 applicants for just 90 spots this fall. Students expressed urge to be forced to think for themselves in the age of AI." www.wsj.com/lifestyle/ha...

I feel like we should be able to get money for the humanities. I think @jbpritzker.bsky.social & MK Pritzker would be interested in the connection between critical research into the workings of power, culture, and society and habits of mind that support democracy and equality.

Bad men gain power when we don't fight back. Vivek Ramaswamy is everything wrong with politics: arrogance, cruelty, dishonesty, and a willingness to do ANYTHING for power. Ohio deserves better. I'm proud that my wife, MK, is supporting Dr. Amy Acton today.

Statement from First Lady MK Pritzker discussing a $500,000 investment to support Amy Acton for Ohio Governor. The statement criticizes certain political behaviors and expresses endorsement for Amy Acton, emphasizing the importance of standing against divisive and extremist actions.

In the end, the ability to pursue creative thought, liberated from demands of the market, is about freedom and both individual and collective realization and fulfillment. When people feel fulfilled and empowered intellectually they improve the health of the entire body politic.

I'll have to be vague on the details, but I've been sad to see and hear how the Vanderbilt report is being used opportunistically by people who never cared for humanities research to begin with to begin "debates" about the "state" of the humanities.

The "declining majors and enrollments" anxiety is downstream from underinvestment in the research infrastructure of the humanities. Perversely, the obsessive focus on this (see the New Yorker's "Decline of the English Major") really distracts from the underlying issue, which is research investment.

I had not seen this clip where Tammy Duckworth advises Democrats to "not impeach anybody," "get back to work" and "allow" Donald Trump to "save face" and I would just like to remind the senator from IL that the federal government took 4,000 Chicagoans and murdered a 38-year-old father last fall.

Kind of hard for a professional organization to argue that history is integral to democracy when it goes to lengths to quash democracy within its own membership. And this isn't what I want my members dues to be used for. I suspect many will feel the same. 🗃️

If the AHA leadership continues to heed that advice, its members can expect further silencing of their voices within the organization. In addition to recommending that the AHA frame the historical profession as an arm of the “national security” apparatus, Thorn Run has told its leadership that it should reroute “all future requests for public statements,” “all member concerns regarding conflict zones,” and “all concerns regarding historians in conflict zones” to a leadership committee, so that it can contain and control “out-of-scope debates.” The aim, in other words, is to “utilize the January 2026 veto as a safe harbor precedent to prevent future mission-creep” by shifting from vetoes to a place where institutional silence ensures that there is nothing to veto.

The American Historical Association hired a lobbying firm to help silence member advocacy on Palestine. In this essay, Adam Rzepka covers @historians.org's relationship w/ Thorn Run Partners, its deep ethical conflicts, & the advocacy crisis AHA has thrust upon us. www.chronicle.com/article/a-sc...
