Another way to put this: most institutions, including most research universities, believe that research support in the way of time is something that faculty must largely buy extramurally based on merit, even if research quality is their most important metric in assessing faculty performance.

Virtually everyone who cycles on the road has stories about drivers nearly killing them out of carelessness or incompetence and then reacting to being appraised of having nearly killed them by threatening or trying to kill them.

A driver in New York City chased a cyclist into a protected bike lane because the rider *gasp* tapped the car after it nearly hit him. Remember, drivers can do whatever they want to cyclists, but if we touch their cars it is literal violence.
