You tell yourself that it doesn't matter,
that you alone can do it.
there's never anyone to talk you out of it,
so you believe that you believe it,
for as long as you can,
sometimes at night you don't open your book,
you sit in silence and admit the truth,
but in the mornings you're busy and the lie,
reassures as it slyly covers over that place
where you tell yourself you don't have time to look.
And this is, no, this needs to be, good enough.

Biter's Block

Wood creaks between my jaws.
Coarse rubber and the tang of metal on my tongue as I sink my teeth
into the pencil.

The prompt is #Bites.

I roll the wet, splintered shaft
along serrated ivory edges
and ponder.

Snake bites?
Flea bites?
Biting an apple?
A crust of jam and bread?
... His shoulder?

I wonder how to convey in lyrical flights
the feelings and notions arising from 'bites'.

But I munch on in vain
at the well chewed observer of an empty page.

I once flew in a dream, I had no need of hatchling's wings,
only the sleep that is often a squandered gift to the young,
those chirping larks who will in their own aging dreams find
the world we presently shape bears not up,
but presses down on all, in crushing opressive demand.

Hovering vultures are hoisted on perverse wings
that hold them high aloft as they even yet descend,
to feast on the weathered carrion of blind seers below,
their beating wings extinguishing light but not the fire,
that shadowy flame that knowing consumes,
feasting on pity and then kindred kindness,
swishing wings directing the conflagration to remake the below,
before they repair to their gilded nests in the gold limned stars,
leaving a combustion that is kindled by heavy skies,
themselves indifferently warmed by a long dead sun god,
as the last remaining songbirds,
fragents of dreamers past, singe themselves in its black updrafts.

I hate this stuff
this red, viscous liquid
it made me hate cherries
but it's the only way out
I'll chug eight ounces
trust me, it's not fun
especially waiting for the nausea
but if you vomit you don't get as high
all I want is to dissociate
to escape this world for a night
distanced and detached
somehow it makes things beautiful
and when I close my eyes
I see things I can't explain
but it makes walking difficult
and speaking too, apparently
slurring as if I were drunk
writing is tricky because my hand
won't listen and do what it's told
it's suddenly got a mind of its own
but only for writing, unfortunately
(that could have been fun)
but then the crash comes
a long, sweaty, fitful sleep
and I feel like shit because
I'm drinking fucking cough syrup
to cope with life
the are worse things I could be doing
but man, I wish I didn't hate cherries

$Lament for a dog's Arse Waiting for an ambulance, not the siren's blazing, fingertip chewing wait, more that she's fallen and her chest is sore wait, sleep was short last night, due to the digestive insistence of a sick dog requiring forensic attention, and now, the dog's egregious arse is expelling a rancid cloud of paplable vileness, like a thousand drunk men had broken in, and were standing sullenly swaying, as they pick at their doner kebabs and unleash vindictive farts that have become self aware, a kind of vengelful spite if you will, I cannot reason with such a creature, I do not have the wherewithal, but I know I am facing true evil. How will I explain to the paramedics that this smell does not come from the devil's bowels? In the end they come and say nothing is wrong, not even the pestilent air is a trouble, and the malevolence disperses as the dog rallies, but a second call followed by a second wait later that day reveals a fractured bone, and I feel not like a dog's, but a horse's arse.$

Things to Consider in the Shower

As he stood in the warm shower
he noticed his reflected toes
projected through steamed glass
onto the faded socks he had discarded on the floor.
They were become wriggling pink things
encased in grey, beckoning him to observe
as through thickening condensation his feet blackened
and putrified, until shrivelled and gangrenous the toes entice no more.
He stares, repulsed and compelled at what is to come,
and frozen beneath steaming water,
he remains in mortal contemplation. never moving,
until with a squishing snap
his ankle crumples and he falls,
to lie still amid the drowning water.

Never Underestimate a Good Pie

He kept pies in his pockets thinking it would do do harm,
to have something to present to a lady he may wish to charm,
and so it proved, his fluffy pastry repaid that trust,
and he met a lovely woman who bit into his crust,
after some time together he looked at her and thought maybe,
he would need a new tart recipe, for what seemed like a baby,
but she just laughed and said "No child is in my belly,
it's where I sometimes store my old full colour telly."

A night-shift morgue attendant had decided that brain fluid was the ultimate superfood.

Every shift, he collected a little from the freshest arrivals, ran it through the office water filter, and stirred it into his protein shake. He'd never felt healthier.

He was careful to rinse the filter afterward. Nobody had noticed, although the receptionist had recently complained that the water tasted funny.

On the Wall

In Roman times they were used to apportion size,
and thus self regarded self in fragile confidence.
There were those who always enjoyed a good mirror,
the ability to gaze upon oneself a lubricant, but not social,
until now, when a device invented to allow us to converse,
instantly lets us share fantastic, fanatical visions,
not just of our constructed faces, filtered and toxed
but our fabricated lives, gaudily wrapped with tags attached.

Then mirror, then, may be thought to have been consigned
to the lonely solipsistic ponderings of introspective inspection,
but smile, we can now beam light off them to differently illuminate,
finding reflected percussive clashes between objects so massive,
they consume even our own egocentric orbits,
and in spite of the gravity of the subject,
I cannot help but make a joke, we have found the universe waves.

*Gravitational waves are ripples in spacetime created by events like the merging of 2 black holes or predicted by Einstein (and others before him) that we first observed in 2015 using lasers and mirrors spaced 4 kilometres apart.
