14-year-old Daniel Umanskyi was killed by a Russian drone on September 25,2026. His open notebook, with unfinished homework, was left lying on the table. Daniel was writing about the moral code of Volodymyr Monomakh&how unacceptable it is for the strong to hurt the weak. Deepest condolences. 📹:BBC

We at Skype a Scientist are deeply troubled by the closure of the Academy of Natural Sciences. We urge you to contact Drexel University Leadership and Academy interim leader Trish Wellenbach to urge them to reopen the museum. President Merlo president@Drexel.edu Trish Wellenbach tw958@drexel.edu

a block of text with a statement that reads We at Skype a Scientist are deeply alarmed by the decision of Drexel University leadership and the Academy of Natural Sciences Board to close the Academy’s public museum.

Skype a Scientist is based in Philadelphia with deep roots in our city. Making science accessible, in particular for Philly’s children, is a top priority for our organization. We operate in community centers, at street festivals, and at the intersection of science and art. For the last 10 years, we have worked to engage a broader coalition of Philly residents to care for our local biodiversity.

Our program does not exist in a vacuum. The work that we do, alongside environmental education centers, our museums, classroom teachers, and more, create an ecosystem of connections with science. The loss of any part of this fragile ecosystem is detrimental. The Academy of Natural Sciences grounds biodiversity education in Philadelphia. With grand fossil halls, historical connections, and engaging exhibits, it is a place where many Philadelphians develop a love of science. Loss of access to this space cannot be tolerated.

We are living through an erosion of public education, particularly in the life sciences. Philadelphia cannot afford to lose our flagship biodiversity museum.

We call on the leaders of Drexel University and the Academy board to reverse their decision to close the Academy’s public museum. The children of Philadelphia and future generations of Philly-made scientists are counting on you.

I have my great great great grandfathers diary in my possession - he drew this in 1845. There were no photos so he drew what he saw. I am sharing Henry T Whinfield’s art for the first time ever to the world. This is a world debut.

A few years ago I accidentally sent my 80yo mother a PowerPoint for my Colonial US class. Next AM she found it, no explanation, so read before breakfast. I told my class and one guy said, "Katie's mom's a badass." Also, turns out my Age of Jackson lecture is wonderful, honey. #history

Okay, I know everything is messed up, but some bold soul is out here writing on Carolingian ecological sovereignty and I love it.

As soon as the library opened this afternoon, I sat on my chair--which a taller employee had last used--hit the edge, and fell on my butt in spectacular fashion. A little boy in a Superman sweatshirt ran behind the desk to help me up. It was kind of perfect. #Library

Remembering the 146 workers killed in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911. They had gone on strike two years before, but hadn't won better conditions. The guy who led that walkout, Jacob Kline, would burn to death in front of a locked door in 1911. #LaborDay

I reviewed my recorded lecture on Egypt to see if it's reusable this semester. The transcript says that about a third of the way through I said, "Listen, Jeremy, we're doing this." I don't know a Jeremy, but I'm glad I got tough with him. Possibly I should record that lecture again. #Teaching

In grad school I did a 17 pp annotated bibliography in a day because I had to. It was good. The ability to evaluate and compare large quantities of material is a critical skill. If I'd used AI for that, I'd be less capable now. And I'd be ashamed of myself. #AI

Two former students from different courses, both brilliant, came to find me at a PT job. Turns out they're cousins! They brought a third cousin whom I'll have this semester to introduce us. Such a kind thing to do--for her, and for me bc I got to see them again. My happy heart! #Teaching
