Why are people piling on this passage? Literally there are separate *books* about wedge-issue attacks on Democrats on every one of these issues. They were obviously vulnerable to attack in some sense or these messages would not have found an audience. Who is denying this? What is going on?

From Tom Edsall’s column. I wish he had specified what he means by “wedge-issue attacks.” I’m also not sure what it means to say that Dems have been “vulnerable” to these things for 60 years. Presumably, he is suggesting that backlash politics has, on balance, harmed the Democrats.

In reality, the Democratic Party has been vulnerable since the 1960s to wedge-issue attacks on such subjects as civil rights, women’s rights, affirmative action, welfare spending, crime, gun control, gay marriage and transgender rights.

Fourth, a pair of wrenches to throw into some campaign messaging punditry: Americans are about equally likely to say that GOP is focusing too much on race/gender as to say that Dems are, and neither party has an image advantage on "fighting corruption."

Democrats have tried to seize on fighting corruption as a midterm plank. But while some of the examples they’ve pointed to – including Trump’s personal earnings while president – are deeply unpopular with the public, Americans are about evenly split on which party is fighting corruption, with nearly half saying that applies to neither side. And amid Republican efforts to focus on culture war issues, Americans are nearly as likely to say that the GOP is too focused on race and gender issues (31%) as they are to say Democrats are doing too much on the topic (36%).
