This is misleading in a way that the genAI pushers are keen maintain. Machine learning models trained on manuscript images can be very useful for historical research, e.g. they can match disconnected scribal hands. But the 'AI' in this story is using Bodleian material to train fake image generators.

The Bodleian houses hundreds of thousands of fragments of the Oxyrhynchus papyri from the Egypt Exploration Fund, that still need to be studied. They've been at it for a century but the end isn't in sight. If AI can play a role here, that would be a big plus.

over the past few weeks several AI evaluation/cybersecurity experts have explained how what's happening is a result of human incompetence rather than "AI going rogue". I'm begging the media to show a shred of journalistic integrity and stop parroting what altman or amodei say

The provost of UMass (R1) literally told a group of historians this: “research” means pulling in large external grants and unless you do that, you don’t matter and get nothing internally. “Research“ is about $ and institutions support only those disciplines that bring in $ or raise it privately.

load can get a course release to do research. The Advanced Research Directive fellowship, which offered a 1 semester teaching release, has already been defunded several yrs ago. Now the Wolfe fellowship may also be gone. How much is CUNY spending on AI bullshit? Does CUNY want research? 2/2

Just as a matter of interest, *any* use of AI in scholarly writing is tantamount to plagiarism. You don’t know whose work the AI has trained on, so you can’t give them proper acknowledgment or make an appropriate citation.
