Hayley@writagal.bsky.social · 14h agoSometimes I wonder about the impact of politicians and media treating Ardern with such misogynistic contempt for years on end and it’s pretty frightening to consider that all that energy didn’t die when Ardern left, and is now funneled into policy, and misogyny/ racism is normalised (and rewarded).
Placing bets now that if you’re a woman who has experienced misogyny in New Zealand you’ll know exactly what this is.

“The Greens had written to the Speaker and met with him “multiple times” about the “demonstrable fact” there was uneven standards being applied.” These uneven standards are what sexism & racism look like - it’s disturbing Parliament alongside mainstream media can’t muster the energy to call it out.

“We aren't a country, I think, who would like to think of the fact that we've got old people who are either starving or freezing in their own homes.” We don’t like to think about it but it’s absolutely the reality for our older people - and everyone in power is perfectly happy with this status quo.

A vote for National, NZFirst, or ACT is a vote to keep older kiwis in poverty, and to make their poverty worse. This coalition government has actively passed policies that have made things tougher for everyone who isn't in the wealthy donor class. It will only get worse if they are voted back in.

The lack of self reflection from media on their own biases absolutely results in the current government being held to lower expectations - to the detriment of the public, particularly vulnerable communities, and consistent, escalating erosion of democratic norms.

I can’t say enough how vital this kind of writing is. It shouldn’t be rare to see decision makers & leaders being held to account, but this is one of the few crystal clear, absolutely on point articles I’ve seen outside of the excellent work being done by those who don’t have a mainstream platform.

Point taken Andrew, but my study of the Hansard from 2024 onwards is a clear record of how Winston Peters, far more than any other MP, is responsible for the decline in the standards of the House, which ironically he so often decries. The Speaker appears to be complicit in enabling this. #nzpol

My sister has moved house so I told her she needs to update her details on the electoral roll because same day registration is no longer possible. She had no idea about the changes. Will there be an advertising campaign? Otherwise people won't know and will be turned away on election day. #nzpol

In the last two elections in between checking my enrolment and election day I was removed from the roll. Only found out when I attempted to vote. All sorted out painlessly at the time but it doesn’t bode well
