Gonna keep telling this story. I watched an hour long "How To Write An AI Novel" how to video out of curiosity and I shit you not, 60% of the video was about how to trick Claude into writing something that didn't look like it was AI. If genAI is a tool, it's core audience uses it mostly for fraud.

As I see more friends fall victim to this discord hack, I remind people that if someone asks you to download their new game out of the blue, right now, because it will only take a couple minutes, after "catching up" for a minute It's a hack, and they will take over once you download that file.

something that got edited out of my tomb raider preview because we were covering this elsewhere, but still a sentiment i wanted to get out of my system. companies are moving the goalpost for what is "acceptable" uses of genAI as they insist that it is "inevitable" as if games couldn't be made before

This is a similar explanation to the one Sega has given for its AI use in Crazy Taxi: World Tour, and that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developer Sandfall Interactive gave for why it used placeholder assets that it later replaced with human-made ones. All of this is slowly letting the mask slip on what has been lingering under the surface of discussions around genAI as an unethical plagiarism machine trained on other people’s stolen art and the very real threat to human jobs as suits seek to use the tech to replace human jobs: this bullshit is everywhere now, shoehorned into processes that have never needed them before.

The narrative of AI is already so ingrained in everything we know and love is convenient for companies using it. As more developers come forward that they’re using the tech, even for processes that never actually result in generated material showing up in the final product, the more it feels like studios are moving to goalpost for what is an “acceptable” use of something that is, by design, created by unethical means and utilized to unethical ends by unethical people. Every time a company is “brave” enough to admit they used generative AI as a “tool” to create better experiences, it continues to push a narrative often touted by people who have everything to gain by its perpetuation: This is inevitable. The slop machine that is killing the planet and threatening jobs in every creative field cannot be stopped because its benefits outweigh the costs.

Maybe there will come a day where every video game studio is relying on stolen art, even early on in the development pipeline, rather than the work of it. That doesn’t mean that we have to carry wasted water for tech that has poisoned everything it touches. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis isn’t the first or last game to disappoint me on this front, but if the best use people can come up with for genAI is to create junk they wouldn’t even put in a final game, I have serious doubts about it being the inevita…

We asked the Crystal Dynamics team about its use of generative AI in developing Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. Here’s what Jeff Adams, experience director on the game, had to say.

Just be prepared. We've all seen that headline going around today that Bluesky is the current #1 app, and X dropped out of the top 25. That means the absolute worst people in the world are going to be coming here trying to turn THIS place into just as much of a shithole. Block them. Don't engage.
