Notably, this absurd executive order appears to recognize that Trump cannot directly control the Smithsonian. It orders that the signs go up not on the museum itself, but on sidewalks purportedly maintained by the National Parks Service. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

Sec. 3. Warning Visitors About the Ideological Capture at the National Museum of American History. (a) The Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Director of the National Park Service (NPS) and in coordination with the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, shall install temporary signage along the NPS-maintained sidewalks and walkways used by the public to access the Museum, informing visitors of the findings of the Report and of the policy set forth in section 1 of this order. Such signage shall notify visitors that the Museum exhibits should be renovated consistent with the findings in the Report and direct visitors to locations and resources for accurate information regarding America’s history. (b) Because the Museum has failed to appropriately honor the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence during this 250th anniversary year of the founding of our country, the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Director of the NPS and in coordination with the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, shall install temporary exhibits or signage on NPS-maintained sidewalks, walkways, and land used by the public that corrects inaccurate information presented in the Museum.

BREAKING: Trump just ordered warning signs and exhibits to be installed outside the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History to alert the public that the museum does not, in his view, accurately reflect American history. For the record: It does.

Teaching the road to the Civil War. Some of the landmarks include a controversial war with Mexico, rising anti-immigrant (and anti-Catholic) sentiment, and the Supreme Court stripping citizenship from a vulnerable class of people.

Boards of Trustees ***LIKE*** the Trump demands. They ***AGREE*** with them. They like the idea of putting the screws on activist, lefty, and Muslim students. They like the idea of a whiter student body and conservative curriculum. They want these things and think $200 million is a fair price.

Getting a lot of replies along the lines of "oh, you rube, you still think the law matters" and it feels strategically foolish to just concede that it doesn't. Contest everything. Expose the hypocrisy.

The attacks on public higher education began decades ago across the board as state legislatures reduced support initiating a spiral of tuition increases, expansion of student loans, increasing uni dependence on grants and donors need for attendant admin. We are reaping the bitter crop.

Attacks on public universities are sometimes cast as a red state affliction, but one of the core attacks — on the state funding base — is most certainly not limited to red states, and it’s really a race to the bottom across the country.
