Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III issued a defense of the National Museum of American History to staffers, in response to a caustic White House report accusing the museum of pushing “extreme political activism.”

Turns out lots of different kinds of people are susceptible to a charming outsider who promises to solve their political problems despite obvious red flags. There's a valuable lesson in that, at least, if folks could learn it.

I actually kind of believe the likes Platner & Brett Kavanaugh when they say they have no memory of committing sexual violence. Not just because these guys were so drunk at the time, but also because committing sexual violence is so banal to them that it’s not distinct enough to be remembered.

It’s not a speculative question. you’ll see elements of what they would be doing in what they find time to do beyond their ambition. Are they promoting others, or just themselves? Are they reading? Is there a cause they fight for? Do they really care how others are doing?

Re: finding good people to work with or elevate. It can be tricky—there are lots of phonies out there who know how to talk the talk. The question you have to ask: what would they be doing if not the thing they’re doing now?

Not that this would be exonerating but I don’t think it counts as a “date rape” if they’re not on a date and in fact the guy broke into her house.

The media should also stop labeling it “sexual assault” and use the word rape, because that’s what he’s being accused of.

Stephen King has a chance to do the funniest thing.

I hope they recognize that ignoring, excusing, even celebrating the earlier red flags means that they forced multiple women to go through the anguish of telling their rape stories publicly, with their names attached, in the newspaper. It is their fault Racicot and Fifield are experiencing this pain.

i will not forget the men who downplayed the earlier allegations of abuse against platner and said accepting them was just the price we had to pay to gain control of the senate. i hope they feel like fucking assholes.

I'm just petty enough to go check the accounts of journalists and pundits who wrote glowing pieces about Platner as the future of the party and yeah, they're deleting the skeets as we speak. This is a SUPER unpopular opinion, but social media is just about the worst place to get political info

In fact, a general rule of not treating antisemitism like an irrelevancy, or just something you get accused of for not being sufficiently pro-Israel, might be a step in the right direction.

Politics now is all cult-adjacent. Personalities and team identification. Real actual struggle for power and a better world requires mature and clear-eyed skepticism. MAGA isn’t the only political cult with built-in denial of reality. Every day we get new and disturbing examples of where this leads.

Like with the Cesar Chavez news that came out a few months ago: women should never have to weigh options like this. Society as a whole needs to change this. Of course, Collins is fucking awful, and I hope the ME Democrats can get their shit together fast enough to run someone against her.
