NEW REPORT: The abolition of NHS England presents a rare opportunity to reset the centre of the NHS, but it carries significant risks. Nuffield Trust and IfG researchers have spoken to experts involved in current and past reforms and assessed historical examples of major restructures.

Abolished to perfection? Building a better centre for the NHS

Reorganisation has been a regular feature of NHS history, but has often failed to deliver its goals. The abolition of NHS England marks the biggest restructure of the health service’s command structur...

As NHS England’s chiefs sit down with local trust chairs and chief execs to discuss a “financial re-set”, a quick reminder of how difficult the financial situation is in the NHS right now. A short thread >>

RFK Jr.'s HHS Secretary confirmation means he'll oversee Medicare, Medicaid/CHIP, and Marketplace health coverage as well as crucial public health agencies like the CDC, NIH, & FDA. He was confirmed despite making it clear in his hearings that he doesn't understand the programs he'll be overseeing.

Our new analysis out today looks at the deteriorating finances of NHS trusts. NHS trusts consume over 75% of the English NHS budget, so if you want to know how the NHS is coping with its current funding, your starting point should be the doubling of the trust overspend to £1.2bn by March 2024 >>

Chuffed to be speaking today at Ireland’s National Health Summit on how to shift services from hospital to the community. Like the UK, Ireland has embarked on a 10-year plan to reorient its health and care system towards prevention and the community — so lots to learn as well 👀 #HealthSummit25

How we train our clinical staff matters. New @nuffieldtrust.bsky.social report looks at clinical placements for nurses and midwives and makes some punchy recommendations. Big team effort on this @sjanereed.bsky.social @ninahemmings.bsky.social & many more.

NEW REPORT: We’ve worked with @fnightingalef.bsky.social on a rapid review of the training standards for UK #nurses and #midwives – evidence behind the standards, their implementation and factors impacting students’ experiences. Read it here 👇

The 10-year-plan will say what we all expect. The problem, as with the last 10 plans, will be implementation and that is going to cost a lot on top of the existing system. We lack the staff. We lack the change ability. Good read from the Nuff here:

NEW: Shifting care from hospitals into community services is central to the government's plan for fixing the #NHS. Why is this, and how can we avoid failure this time? Find out in our new long read by @theasrstein.bsky.social & @sjanereed.bsky.social ✍️ www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk/news-item/br...

Huge peice of work with really helpful findings for nursing and midwifery training. They do not shy away from the reality that current capacity issues are impacting the quality of supervision and practice learning. 👏 Great work @sjanereed.bsky.social, @ninahemmings.bsky.social and others.

Proud to be part of this work with @nuffieldtrust.bsky.social + @fnightingalef.bsky.social colleagues. Main takeaway: there’s much to improve about how we train midwives and nurses in the UK. Our standards have some unintended consequences and are ripe for rethinking. Ideas and evidence inside! ⬇️

Govt says NHS must "reform or die". Shifting care so more happens outside hospitals is central to plans. So far, so sensible. But they're not the first to promise it, and no one has yet succeeded. Why, and how to avoid failure this time?Super read by @sjanereed.bsky.social & @theasrstein.bsky.social

New piece out today with @theasrstein.bsky.social on what we think is missing from the current debate on how to move care out of hospital. Many past governments have had similar aims but progress is elusive. Here’s why we think that is, and what should be different this time ⬇️

This analysis by @stutibagri.bsky.social is truly 🤯. Why are so many people seeking therapy on the NHS not finishing treatment or ‘reliably recovering’? Important suggestions inside on how the system might better meet patient needs and curb attrition. ⬇️

NEW #QualityWatch analysis from @stutibagri.bsky.social finds that of the 1.8 million people who sought help from NHS Talking Therapies in 2023-24, only 17% finished a course of treatment and “reliably recovered”. #mentalhealth @healthfoundation.bsky.social www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk/news-item/do...

Wisdom from @theasrstein.bsky.social “Ministers have long warned the NHS against the naive belief in the magic money tree. But they themselves are at risk of falling for the appealing notion of a magic productivity tree which will make the NHS more efficient just by shaking the magic tree harder”

In his speech later today, the Health Secretary is due to announce “zero tolerance for failure” reforms to the #NHS – including league tables and crack turnaround teams for failing providers. Read our response from @theasrstein.bsky.social: www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk/news-item/nu...
