Lots of rain yesterday, so didn’t go out to get soaked. Dry with occasional sunshine so far today. Managed to do first walk of the day.

Complicated forces at work here - communities which took their Kirk’s for granted for decades - most rarely attending and never giving. But also the national Kirk which resisted moves to a more localised system of support and decision making - where communities would pay more but have more say.

The church is often known as “Kirk Covenant” in reference to its construction in the year of the signing of the National Covenant. Faced with closure, a local charity was formed to purchase the kirk and turn it into a local heritage and community resource. They took possession in June 2026. 🧵2/3

This T-shaped kirk, built in 1638, is our #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek. Kirkmaiden Old Kirk was built to replace St Catherine’s Church at Mull of Galloway. It is the parish church for Scotland's most southerly parish A bellcote was added, with an iron weathervane in 1885 and a vestry in 1921. 🧵1/3

A pipe organ dating from 1876 is being installed at St Barnabas’ Church in Jericho. Built originally for Bargeddie Church near Glasgow, it is being combined with pipework from Bow Common in London by Henry Willis & Sons Organ Builders, the firm that built the original instruments.

This prominent Motherwell landmark church, is our #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek. The Kirk at the Cross, was formerly known as Dalziel St. Andrew’s Parish Church until June 2025. Designed by Glasgow architect David Thomson to replace an 18th century building, it opened in 1874. 🧵1/2
