Me, a scientist: academic life is amazing, you spend your time on discovery, the salaries are pretty decent, you work in a rich intellectual community, you get to travel, you hang out with brilliant young students, wooo Also me, at 5am: i just had a stress dream about not getting that grant

If you work with international personnel, you may want to comment on this proposed rule change that would put visa holders out of status immediately (instead of after a 60 day grace period) when their employment ends keepthe60days.com

Keep the 60 Days: H-1B, E-3, L-1, O-1 & TN grace period

DHS proposes ending the 60-day grace period after a layoff for H-1B, E-3, L-1, O-1 and TN visa holders. Comment on USCIS-2026-0364 before November 10, 2026.

White House Moves to Take Control of N.I.H. Grants

Federal officials are drafting an executive order that would place grants under review by an outside panel, the latest effort to redirect billions of dollars in research spending.

Please, I am begging you. Do not use dplyr::ntile() in any serious statistical analysis in which you want to group continuous observation into quantile-based bins. Despite the name it doesn't actually do that, and the thing it actually does is very dangerous when accuracy matter. #rstats

The trouble with ‘ntile()’ – Notes from a data witch

Please, please, please do not use ‘dplyr::ntile()’ in an analysis that will be submitted to a regulatory agency. It’s secretly an ill-conceived SQL tool that doesn’t do what you probably want it to, a...

Does the brain really favor a particular threshold of statistical evidence, or should one simply let the statistical tail wag the science dog? Why not show the continuity of evidence in fMRI results rather than drawing an arbitrary boundary? More information, greater transparency & reproducibility.

Have you ever felt like something was missing from your #fmri results? Have you been worried about potential reproducibility issues? Well, this new @natmethods.nature.com article with 40+ coauthors shows how the simple change to transparent thresholding helps both. Go Figure! rdcu.be/B4tikBETdQZa

A comparison of old and new thresholding approaches for fMRI data. The newer, transparent thresholding allows for interpreting context, more complete modeling, a reduction of biases and an increase in meaningful content. This all leads to more accurate interpretations and improved reproducibility evaluations.
