Today's complaint about the AI in education discourse: Too much of it is framed around a future that is going to happen to us, as opposed to seeing the future as something we may have some agency to shape. I reject the deterministic view of AI, particularly genAI. It's a tool, not our master.

the ai cycle: this will do things on it's own this will do things with human supervision well if we have a human go over everything it does we'll save some money turns out it actually can't do anything

Two Saturdays ago, a high school teacher and I got 11 high school students together with 9 preservice teachers and had a big conversation about school and teaching and learning. Then, we drafted a collective op-ed. It was published this morning! www.news-gazette.com/opinion/gues...

Our Turn | A call to 'strengthen the human connections at the heart of education'

An open letter, from an inter-generational mix of 23 Urbana High School students, preservice teachers and supportive faculty.

It’s a common misconception that ADHD is just an inability to focus. Really, it’s a struggle to control focus. I can hyperfixate for hours on complex but pointless tasks and freeze on simple tasks. Some days, my brain’s a Lamborghini with no brakes. Other days, a rusty bike with a stuck chain.

Individual teachers cannot be expected to solve this problem, and the challenge requires us to get to roots of a system that students see as purely transactional (for good reason) and for which AI can fulfill the transaction. Putting this on individual teachers is simply unfair.

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do as a teacher when students are using AI to write personal reflections. We can talk about assessing the process + including more metacognition-focused work, but if students have access to AI, they are using AI. #edusky

I’m not saying AI is evil — god forbid I be that moralistic and clear — I’m saying it is worse than that. It’s MID. Too mid to do much more than externalize some risk, produce some mid documents, and accelerate climate risk as a cute little benefit.

Sometimes it takes a bit for a book to find its audience. I’m not sure exactly what’s going on rn, but I’m sure as heck grateful for all of the love this lil’ book has been receiving lately. 🩷 I can’t WAIT to hear what your students and book group members have to say about it. #EduSky
