So, I was officially promoted (got the BoT letter and everything!!) and now I’m trying to figure out what comes next. I did a lot of writing and publishing pre-tenure. Because of that, I’ve got 3 books on the horizon, all probably out next year plus 3 articles accepted and likely out this year.

Wrote about stories for The Fulcrum this month My fav line: “The same logic that scrubs people of color from ancient epics is the logic that scrubs us from American history because in both cases, the sanitized version requires our absence.” thefulcrum.us/inclusion-di...

The Odyssey Isn’t Real, But American Diversity Is

After Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was released in theaters, Elon Musk declared he would use Grok to create a more “historically accurate” version of the ancient epic poem. The uproar over the film...

My takeaway from that speech is that we are headed down the road of Trump trying to outright rig elections. It probably won't work, but he's going for it.

This is going to be a thing higher ed will have to grapple with in the coming years. Professors know a lot (usually in a very specific area). That’s valuable. But pontificating about your smartness for 3 hours ain’t gonna cut it anymore. Pedagogy will save us.

The Republican Party quietly deleted their own ad attacking Ken Paxton's record on crime... because Paxton is now the Republican Party's nominee to represent Texas in the U.S. Senate. Figured if the ad is important enough to delete, it's important enough to see...

Evangelical Christian leaders literally gathering around a gold statue of the president and celebrating it, all while raging against any accusation of idolatry. This is what idol worship looks like.

What I wish for everybody to remember when Canvas comes back online: The reason OUR data can be held for ransom is because Instructure, their owners (KKR private equity & Dragoneer venture capital), & our own employers (see ASU Atomic) monetize it. It's Canvas that hacked education & stole our IP.

who could have imagined that it wasn't a good idea to have a nearly ubiquitous educational platform run by for-profit tech? @mattseybold.bsky.social is who! (yep, Canvas is down, hacked, stick a fork in it)

I am well aware that across multiple academic communities I have a reputation as someone who works really hard, perhaps bordering on workaholic. My suggestion to anybody entering academia (or already in): don't become a workaholic if you can help it. It's a job, a lovely job, but a job nonetheless

When the “Patriot Games” were announced, many ppl compared them to The Hunger Games. And they should have. The parallels were just too good. But I’ve been sitting with this idea of spectacle ever since Peele’s Nope. That’s what this op-ed is about. thefulcrum.us/media-techno...

The Capitol Is Counting on Us to Laugh

When the Trump administration announced the Patriot Games, many people laughed. Selecting two children per state for a nationally televised sports competition looked too much like Suzanne Collins’ Hun...

This is one of the most quietly revolutionary things any city can do to improve kids' lives & outcomes. If you genuinely care about kids having access to education or safe after school spaces & activities, then fund your libraries, staff your libraries, & make every public school ID a library card.

Whoa 🤯 in Slow-Mo@0lsi.bsky.social · 3mo ago

Chicago made it so every public school student can use their school ID as a #LibraryCard 📚. No forms, no extra steps. It gives over 300k students instant access to #books, #tutoring, and online resources 🙌

Thinking about the Supreme Court decision: When people say, x is a distraction, I like to tell people: actually none of it is. What we're witnessing is a wholesale totalitarian effort to reshape society in ways that benefit Trump, the oligarchy, and those who wish to espouse that.
