💙📚🪐🐉🌶️⚡⏳ I've been asked why I only write positive book reviews. I'm not a literary critic. I'm a reader's advisor librarian working in a bookshop. I only review books I like or know people will want to find. I do read some books where I turn the last page and realize I'll never recommend it.
I have found so many great #SFF reads by checking out the winners of the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus awards. I think I’ve loved all the books that won all 3 awards. This list may need updating but is full of wonderful books.
I love it that libraries do so many wonderful things for readers in addition to loaning out stories across a multitude of ways including paper, digital, audio... Here is a library list of the #SFF Trifecta winners. Support public libraries. mesa.marmot.org/MyAccount/My...
I always get freaked out when the clouds drop and hide the entire canyon and the mesa on the other side.
#SFF Just finished reading a short story by Charlie Jane Anders. I met her several years ago at a Tor dinner and was impressed by her as a person. I haven't loved everything I read that she wrote but I have enjoyed some of them. I did love her new story featuring smart cities that fall in love.
The dream of "smart cities" can so easily turn into corporate control and surveillance dystopia. When you write about future cities, you're writing about humans and what we might become -- for good or ill. I wrestled with these issues as I wrote my steamy romance. buttondown.com/charliejane/...
💙📚🪐🔍 #SFF I really loved_The Death and Birth of Iliana Marek_by David Liss and made notes when reading it. While it has some grisly scenes, horror, and suspense, I loved that it featured kindness, justice, relationships built on friendship, doing the right thing, and the concept of person vs human.
💙📚🪐🔍 #SFF _The Death and Birth of Iliana Marek_ by David Liss is being released tomorrow and I am thrilled. I read the advance copy back in May and it has stayed in my top 5 books of 2026. It's a thrilling story, perfect for the spooky fall season.
💙📚🪐🐉🌶️⚡⏳🔍 Books I finished reading in September. All were enjoyable and will appeal to different readers. The books that personally resonated with me the most were _Hollywood, Ending_, _What Happens at Nightfall_, and _Monsters of Ohio_. ⏭️
💙📚🪐🐉 #SFF The expanded space at Out West Books for my favorite genres. The one sign hasn’t been changed yet but SFF books are my reading home and my health suffers when I don’t have enough so … not bad.
💙📚🐉🌶️ I'm looking forward to seeing the expanded #SFF shelving at Out West Books tomorrow. Yesterday, reviews I wrote of a couple paranormal romances were in The Colorado Sun. coloradosun.com/2026/09/20/o...

💙📚 What I love is a good story well told. I just finished looking at a list of several dozen forthcoming releases looking for what I want to read. The word "literary" to me signals boring. The books I love are fall into science fiction, fantasy, mystery, historical fiction, romance, etc. Genre fic.
💙📚🪐🐉🩸 #SFF shelf at Out West Books. Today's new releases. In a rare turn of events, I haven't read any of these books yet. Some good news for those who shop here, the new owners are expanding the SFF space so more room for more books and consolidating horror.
💙📚🪐🐉 Out West Books has new owners and now the #SFF books are mixed in with all the other new releases now on Tuesday release day at the front of the store. We still display them on the new SFF shelf, too but sometimes a week later. I love looking at new books!
💙📚🪐 #SFF Read Monsters of Ohio by John Scalzi today. Pub date 11/3/26 so preorder at your favorite Indie bookstore. Was in a reading slump. Gave up on 5-7 books after reading 50 pages. Picked up Monsters of Ohio and didn't move again until I turned the last page. Scalzi at his best and most fun.
Streaming American Princess on Kanopy from the library and in episode 7 I heard at least two John Green titles mentioned. I wonder if I missed any. I may have to rewatch. So here is an old photo with John Green.

💙📚🪐🐉🌶️⚡ Books I finished in August. Not all are out yet but if you like cozy romantasy read the first 3 Durst books in anticipation of the January release date for _The Magical Cheese Emporium_. I've loved each one in this great series better than the last. _Massif_ is out next Tuesday.
💙📚🪐🐉 Was on vacation so didn't get the last couple weeks of new #SFF at Out West Books. I'm reading Salt King now and the new owner of the store was thrilled to see I Have No Mouth... published as a stand alone after decades of only being available in collections and anthologies.
💙📚🪐🐉 Out West's new #SFF shelves when I got there yesterday. Didn't get a photo last week because inventory count was in process. Some publishers have gone to a taller format so books that aren't hot off the press end up in the section since they are too tall for the regular shelves.
💙📚🪐🐉🌶️⚡🔍 Books I finished reading in July. Building 903 by Lois Lowry #SFF seems very timely. I may be getting burned out on romance or possibly, the direction it is taking focusing more on the physical than the emotional is just not my cup of tea.
💙📚🪐🐉 New #SFF shelf at Out West Books. Sold one before I finished getting them all up there and then 2 more before the end of my shift. Glad we had more copies.
The last couple weeks have been way too busy. We made a quick road trip, had 3 different sets of house guests, volunteered at movie fundraiser for fire dept. and got to have a conversation with Perrin Pring author of Cash and Gravity at a full capacity author event at Out West Books. #SFF 💙📚🪐
💙📚🪐🐉 Never got around to posting last weeks new releases on the Out West Books #SFF new books shelf. There were only a couple.
A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.
💙📚🪐 #SFF I'm currently rereading Cash and Gravity. Perrin Pring is going to be at Out West Books in Grand Junction tomorrow and I get to talk with her about her fabulous debut novel. Trying to not go full on fan girl but totally excited.
💙📚🪐🐉 New #SFF books shelf at Out West Books. Dead but Dreaming of Electric Sheep and Moss'd in Space came out last week but there was room. Moss'd in Space is one of the books I can't stop suggesting to folks because it is in the running for my favorite SF book of the year.

💙📚 Books read in June. Pretty interesting that stories involving families lost in house fires bookended the month. I did read a YA and a picture book to keep in touch with younger readers. I stretched to get all the way through a memoir dealing with reproduction in salmon and the queer community.
