Three years ago, the government passed a mandate stating sex should exclusively be shared between married couples with the exception of one night a year where pre-marital sex is legal and protection is required for 12 hours. All people get a tattoo at the age of 18 that is red when not able to have sex, but turns green when you are married or on the one night the mandate lifts. It blinks red if you go against the mandate (have sex anyway, have unprotected sex, etc.) and transmits your location to the law enforcement branch in charge of these crimes. There is a biological sensor inside that tracks dopamine and if your levels spike at the same time as someone you're physically near, it documents that as a sexual encounter. Masturbation is legal and it is implied that gay sex successfully operates outside of the mandate. There are multiple anti-mandate signs and events shown throughout the movie.

Ashley unceremoniously drains the rest of his bottle of beer in one chug and Lake’s smile falls to genuine surprise. Once finished, Ashley lets out a contented sigh, still grinning. “Fantastic. Fantastic, fantastic, fan-” He’s interrupted by Lake placing his own nearly-full bottle in front of Ashley, who blinks at it, then picks it up, turning to Lake wordlessly for an explanation. Lake, who is not looking at him, only says “I don’t have germs.” Ashley, nervous, confused, laughing: “Ha, ha… Are you trying to get me drunk?” Lake, incredibly sincere: “Off two beers?” Ashley turns sharply away from him, embarrassed, lifting the bottle to drink. (Quickly) “Just kidding. Thanks.” Lake: “I only bought it so I wouldn’t stand out.” Smaller panels draw a link between the lip of the bottle and Lake’s own lips. Ashley: “Va- (emphatically) You guys can’t drink?” Lake looks off to the side, expression neutral. “No, we drink plenty. Just not stuff like beer.” Ashley turns back with some interest: “Oh, really? Because of the yeast, or…?” He startles himself with apparent realisation, spilling a bit of beer. “Oh!!” He chugs more of the beer, eyes darting away, as he imagines the seemingly obvious answer to his question - a cartoony Dracula-like vampire biting and drinking blood from the neck of a swooning, helpless human. Lake, meanwhile, is thinking of a real photo of water pouring into a wine glass, helpfully labeled “wader” (sic) like old school WordArt. He looks utterly oblivious to Ashlely’s inference.

His handcuffed wrists lay on the cheap table in front of him, visible, unmoving. A play at surrender.

When Cole closes the door behind him, Hanzo immediately looks up. His eyes are red, and puffy, and tear tracks cut through the dirt and blood on his face- his sharp, marble cut face. ‘Keeping an eye’ might be a bt of a stretch, really. Gabe had slammed out of the trailer abd grabbed Coles shoulder wirh a scowl. “I got a castle burning down, a buncha yakuza fighting eachother in it, and one of the little princes nearing life support. I need you to sit there and make sure this one wants to stay. I should be back in twenty minutes or six hours. Good luck.”
