10 Movies About Spain: Cría cuervos… (1976) Ostensibly depicts the dissolution of an upper class family, but actually an allegory for Spain in the latter years of the Franco dictatorship, designed to get past the censors. Geraldine Chaplin is here speaking Spanish and is maybe a ghost. #Filmsky 📽️ 🇪🇸

10 Movies About Spain: Blancanieves (2012) This modern homage to silent films, shot in gorgeous black and white, transposes the story of Snow White (the title is the literal Spanish translation) to the bullrings of Seville, somehow. Maribel Verdú stars as the wicked... rich lady. 🇪🇸 #filmsky 📽️

Cookie Monster is in the booth with Boog at Wrigley, will be singing Take Me Out (to the ballgame, not the Franz Ferdinand song, unfortunately) in the 7th

If anyone was curious how most people experience these things, the Guardians radio guys just had this exchange: “It’s crazy, you come back into town and gas prices have gone up a dollar a gallon.” “What the hell happened?” “I guess we’ll never know… and that’s a fastball on the outside corner…”

MLB GMs will be like "fielding consistently competitive teams is a bad strategy. its better to lose 110 games for a few years in order to build a team that can compete in the playoffs" and then not compete in the playoffs

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) As discussed here previously, Hellboy comics are possibly my favorites, and thus I quite liked this movie, which is closer to where the comics ended up than where they began. And if you want pure Del Toro creature work, there's some great stuff here. #FIlmsky 📽️

A still from Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) showing the main character, played by Ron Perlman, along with his fish-man sidekick Abe Sapien (Doug Jones), surrounded by an army of these huge golden steampunk contraptions. Hellboy holds his impractically large gun.

The Dirt Bike Kid (1985) We return to our Terrible Movies column for this very weird 80s kids movie in which Peter Billingsley inexplicably acquires a flying sentient dirt bike, a power which he uses to save a random depressed guy's hot dog stand and mess with a biker named "Mr. Slime." #Filmsky 📽️

Our next film theme starting in early August will be 10 Movies About Spain, in honor of the country’s recent World Cup victory and my upcoming first visit. Hope you’ll hang out with me! #filmsky 📽️ 🇪🇸

The Odyssey (2026) Seeing this in IMAX was one of my great film experiences of the past few years. I have quite a few thoughts on it but will say this is director Christopher Nolan taking these materials and saying something else about them, breathing new life into them, and that's great. #Filmsky 📽️

A still from The Odyssey (2026) with Matt Damon and several other men striding onto a beach in ancient Greek armor, hauling their wooden boat along with them.

Concerns over fake phenomena cannot be held in good faith. There's no such thing as "good faith" concern over razorblades in Halloween apples or vaccines causing autism. If you still have 'concerns' about these issues you are uninformed, a bigot or being manipulated. No other option.

Thing I Am a Grump About #436: One person yelling “Deeeooo!” And everyone else yelling “DEEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOO!!!!” is fun and humorous in the context of a scene in the film Beetlejuice and in exactly zero other contexts.

I’m at Werner Park here in Omaha to see the local Storm Chasers take on the St Paul Saints. The stadium is literally in a cornfield and the scoreboard is too small to show the lineups apparently but the players are good, I have a hot dog, and am right behind home plate for basically nothing.

Flying to Omaha for work today. There is supposed to be someone in the middle seat in our row and they sat in the row behind us by mistake. They all told the flight attendant that it was fine. “Are you sure?” “YES, JUST TAKE US TO OMAHA, LET’S GO.”

If you like professional wrestling, great, go for it. I have one request which is that it not be covered by sports news media as if it is actually sports, as is happening on the SportsCenter being shown in this airport bar. If someone knows the outcome beforehand, it ceases to be sports, sorry.

This is Beily. He was miraculously found alive under rubble 29 days after the Venezuela earthquakes. He has since been reunited with his 11-year-old human Victoria and is expected to make a full recovery. 14/10 for all (TT: fuerzavzla1)

Earlier this month I enjoyed doing 10 Movies About America, and I'm thinking of making this kind of thing ("10 Movies About...") a regular feature. But which subject to tackle for August is less obvious. I'm open to suggestions! I'll do serious or silly, and probably will. #Filmsky 📽️

After Dark, My Sweet (1990) A kind of weird neonoir involving a bunch of people who have been dealt some bad hands trying to do a kidnapping without any real end game. This was from our "Movies That F***" list and there is some boinking but I don't know how sexy it actually was. #Filmsky 📽️
