@hipsterelectron.bsky.social hey Danny! Will you message me with a good email address? I thought I had one and can’t find it

Ignore my late night posts. Award winning author! I study Black Twitter: goo.gl/Wc98bf …and digital methods: goo.gl/0njUPf Openly Black. Still on The Bird App as *thot leedurr* andrebrock.academia.edu
The habits of use on twitter by marginalized persons through the affordances of the platform result in unique kinds of community formation that are resilient to and in opposition to the attempts by Elon Musk and others to turn it into a Nazi bar. These uses largely go ignored in analysis like yours.
Brock argues that the nature of twitter thereby enables unique manifestations of Black Joy which can be circulated among the greater Black community in ways distinct from the local offline community or on other sites like Facebook, Instagram, or even threads. This is important as it points to use.
Similarly, Brock argues that the functions of twitter, retweeting and hashtags as example, allow for the articulation of Black cultural practices within digital space such that nuanced performances of Blackness and discussions of issues facing the Black community can be circulated among Black users.
Put simply, the design level structure of twitter enables unique ways that users can become visible to one another. Beyond this, other affordances of the platform enable the unique establishment of social networks, including networks of support and mutual aid that rely on twitter's functions.
You do not know what you're asking, nor what you are talking about when you say that the social networks on twitter can be replicated elsewhere. Firstly, following boyd, the social networks on twitter are not just a function of the users themselves but the affordances of twitter as a platform.
But the thing is, it can be replicated elsewhere. It wouldn’t be hard but it would require collective action. There are countless social platforms online, including this one, that can serve that social bridge in similar and sometimes even better and more accessible ways. This is a cop out, imo.
Thus, algorithmic technologies like the one that flagged my post organize how persons arrive in digital space, how their digital selves take shape through the digital space, and what kinds of users can extend themselves through digital space. And we know what kinds of users feel most at home here.
To be phenomenological about it, the history of predominantly white spaces treating Black cultural practices as "rude" or "impolite" or "uncivilized" runs ahead of any Black user, especially given how this history is made actual THROUGH technologies like the above, which organize this digital space.
Because these technologies take whiteness as the point from which a digital world unfolds and since these technologies take a contemporary liberal worldview as their orientation towards race and racism, these technologies will continue to contribute to the suppression of Black digital practice.
Beyond a failure to recognize nuance, this is a failure to recognize what Andre Brock describes as the unique cultural and discursive features of Black digital practice. Moreover, this is a failure that's been happening since algorithms have been introduced into moderation decisions.
I'm amused at the irony of getting this tag for my shitpost which sat squarely at the intersection of Black digital practices and philosophical shitposting, especially since this kind of automated tagging has been a frequent example in my writing about the intersection of AI and marginalization.
this is the first time i have ever seen this tag... seems like it shouldn't be

part of the problem for schumer and other centrists is that they think ICE is awesome *on the merits.* Like, they aren't compromising on ICE funding; they actually love deportations, believe that lawlessness at the border or whatever nonsense is a real problem. 1

In this short essay, @lmsacasas.bsky.social provides a useful checklist for recognizing the Borg complex, and for deconstructing “manufactured inevitability.” A sort of guide for responding to the “banality of evil” as wonderfully captured by Arendt. open.substack.com/pub/theconvi...

so much to be said about the language of implication and how a safe space is formed when an identity can be formed outside of white society. i think queer people can relate to this
