I have zero patience with right-oriented people who claim that their side of the political spectrum is inherently more moral, rational, & intellectual. The past few years have shown that all of this is just a disguise for hatred of those who differ from their ideal images of humanity.

I’m a medieval historian working on the Early Middle Ages, with a focus on church history. I’m currently writing an introductory book on bishops (together with a colleague). I wrote books on the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 and on Scandinavians travelling in Europe (1000–1250). #introduction

I’ve (finally) made a blog to share some of the more intriguing charters I encounter 1st up: an 11th-century land sale where the price included “excellent cloth” called zafalbafal, possibly ṣūf al-baḥr, or sea silk, made from the fibres of Mediterranean shells 🐚 alicehicklin.co.uk/2026/07/14/c...

Three Hundred Solidi and a Cloth from the Sea

An early eleventh-century charter from Provence records a land sale paid for with money and a mysterious cloth called zafalbafal: possibly the ‘wool of the sea’.

I respect someone who doesn't blindly follow the crowd, but this is also a case of an overcorrection that presents an alternative view of the past that is equally one-sided. Here's a - hopefully short - thread on both this particular issue & on historical overcorrections as a phenomenon. (1/n)

A Norway fan has gone viral for not taking part in their Row celebration after matches and won't do it if they win the World Cup "It’s factually wrong; they didn’t row, they sailed over the Atlantic”

Everyone’s enjoying the excommunication drama but there are also lessons for pro-democracy political actors. Decades of accommodating and appeasing this sect did not work and only emboldened them. You have to go whole hog. When you have power, break the back of the reactionaries. Shut them out

OH MY GOD GUYS okay so priests who want back in have to find a bishop willing to vouch for them, swear fealty to Vatican II and then HAND-WRITE THE POPE AN APOLOGY LETTER (I gues so he knows they didn’t use AI? 😂) and are on probation for 1-3 years this is ten times spicier than I even thought
