I was there too - travelling by train, but not that this matters in the bigger scheme of things. This type of conferencing is unsustainable given fuel prices, climate catastrophes and infrastructure breakdowns. And its just one part of the academic business model breaking down.

I was just there, on a day trip after the SASE conference in Bordeaux. Where thousands of academics had gathered (in unbearably hot university buildings). Many (most?) had travelled there by plane. Still thinking that if we keep doing conferences at all, we need much stricter air travel rules.

Third paper from our #assetstruggles SI online! Mareike Beck makes the very important point that assets can also fuel conflict within households, often taking a gendered form not only because of the gender wealth gap but also because of qualitative differences in the assets women and men hold.

I have 3 reviews sitting on my desk right now and I’ve been avoiding them bc of how long it’s going to take to look up every reference to see if it’s hallucinated. This is not sustainable.

BREAKING: Viktor Orbán quits Hungary's parliament after 36 years – confirming my earlier scoop that he's planning a longer US trip this summer, where heads of the Orbán business empire – his daughter and son-in-law – already live, and where he could possibly seek refuge from prosecution.

What a depressing email to wake up to. 1. Of all the books to review, Nature chose the one by a propagandist of Orbán? 2. I published “The Far Right Today” with Polity, thinking they would become my main publisher. Despite some dubious publications, they were solid. Then a new editor arrived.
