This is one of the things that made a diverse city like Philly unusual and, frankly, a lot more pleasant for anyone who needed or wanted to keep masking. In fact, a lot of (mostly Black and brown) folks here who work in frontline jobs are still masking.

I can't forget how the burden of COVID-related bereavement fell on Black, Indigenous, and Latinx communities, yet white people expressed greater willingness to unmask / refusal to mask when they learned of the racial/ethnic disparities in COVID morbidity & mortality. This is well-documented.

I like this notetaking example. it is a good case of how gender works. Notetaking has never been about producing a transcript. It is a bureaucratic skill in the 20th c. organixarion because it is SENSEMAKING. Those women socialized to take notes? They have been doing men’s metacognition for them

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I count on this as a college professor who still assigns writing. My students have moments at every step of the writing process when they need to explain their choices to me — so I really don’t need to worry about them using LLMs to “write.” Sadly, this doesn’t scale. Small classes ftw.

For writers worried that they won't be able to "prove" their work isn't Spicy Autocomplete--worry not. You thought about every choice and will be able to talk about those choices easily and clearly. Folks who used the slop machine didn't make choices and won't have anything to say about why

When I could hide my disabilities, people accepted me. When I couldn’t hide them, they tolerated me. When I became vocal & demanded ableism be addressed, they abandoned me. This is why we need a Disability Pride month. This is why we need advocates. We shouldn’t have to hide.
