Public art, seating and events make public spaces exciting; they fill #PlacesForPeople with joy, forging community and creating memories.
The Big Apple bench is going in. The ball chairs that were all soccer balls during the World Cup, now reflect all sorts of summer sports you can watch on Granville Street patios. Tonight’s Dominican Street Dance drew a crowd. And simple games help make the street magnetic. Week Two looking good.
Super fun & FREE photobooth opportunity on Granville today 📸
To create a truly great people-place, it starts with removing the vehicles, to make room for everything else a GREAT STREET can offer. But that’s not NEARLY enough — it’s not just what you remove, it’s WHAT YOU ADD! Things that are magnetic, that attract people, and entice them to stay a long time.

Never forget, you can double the number of people in a pedestrian street or people-place in two different ways — by doubling the number of people who come (which is harder), or by doubling the length of time that people stay (easier, but we too often get this wrong). Make streets magnetic places.

How will a pedestrianized Granville Street during the #WorldCup quickly evolve into a successful people-place EVERY day? This week I’ve started advising the very impressive @downtownvan.bsky.social leadership team planning the 7 week extension directed by City Council last Thursday. Challenging!
Our Director of Operations, Joshua Davidson, spoke with @justinmcelroy.bsky.social about the extension of the Granville Pedestrian Zone and how we'll be using the grant funding to bring even more programming and activations to Granville Street this summer. www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8QC...
Day ONE of the Granville Street pedestrian zone extension, early Monday morning before the new activations and games are even installed, and people were already arriving to check out the street. Lots of kids! If you’re downtown, come for a stroll, lunch, or bring your work meeting to the street!

Can Vancouver’s pedestrianized Granville Street have a vibrant day-life and night-life AFTER our hosting of local #WorldCup games has ended? On a game-day, absolutely! Our last local match was a week ago, but today’s/tonight’s crowds were New Orleans levels! Our new “centre ice” for EVERY sport?

Downtown Van President & CEO Jane Talbot has long believed in the potential of Granville Street. While many have wondered whether FIFA was worth the investment, this summer showed what's possible. vancouversun.com/news/world-c...
