The ball chairs that were all soccer balls during the World Cup, now reflect all sorts of summer sports you can watch on Granville Street patios. Tonight’s Dominican Street Dance drew a crowd. And simple games help make the street magnetic. Week Two looking good.

Today, we hosted another lunchtime giveaway on the Granville Pedestrian Zone with Chao Mami Express, handing out free salad rolls and mini beverages. We love doing these giveaways as while they can be fleeting (or as long as it takes to hand out 200+ salad rolls), they can make a big impact.

It was a week of transition/turn-over, setting realistic expectations for a sustainable people-street, and rolling out new ideas. And people came, especially kids! A strong start to build on, & more coming!

Never forget, you can double the number of people in a pedestrian street or people-place in two different ways — by doubling the number of people who come (which is harder), or by doubling the length of time that people stay (easier, but we too often get this wrong). Make streets magnetic places.

As some of the Granville Street Pedestrian installations put in for the World Cup are being taken down, new ones are starting to be put up, and are immediately popular. New flowers, planting and pavement painting are being added too, and the street will keep evolving throughout the 7-week extension.

Day ONE of the Granville Street pedestrian zone extension, early Monday morning before the new activations and games are even installed, and people were already arriving to check out the street. Lots of kids! If you’re downtown, come for a stroll, lunch, or bring your work meeting to the street!
