It's not clear to me that his move is rightward. It is a majority view among the left of center, I think. It certainly is the majority view in our country. It's a very complicated issue and careful liberal analysis does not come to a single firm conclusion.

I’ve worn a grubby RNLI cap for decades. I sound London, but I was born in Truro and I was a basically feral (Gen X) kid wandering the coast path with a dog until sunset for a lot of my early life. The lifeboats are in the fabric like trawlers and farms and pasties and fish and chips.

Similarly, while it wasn’t news to me, I recall a fellow member of the Anglican Society (who had been brought up going to church) being very surprised. But then while she is a highly intelligent woman, she’s a computer scientist. People who are good at reading fiction overestimate how obvious it is.

In children's publishing, this has been like VE Day.

The RNLI rescued Luftwaffe pilots in WW2 because the organisation is there to 'save life at sea' - it's something to be immensely proud of. The absolute scourge of the ‘informal meeting’ - a technique management now regularly use to avoid accountability. Always ask what ‘informal’ means, always demand the full formal process with union support, and always remember that it is definitely not an ‘informal meeting’ if HR are there.

... mutually exclsusive? There is a name for being genuinely worried that foreign, dark-skinned people are dangerous. In fact, all phobias are genuinely felt. It's part of the challenge. But "genuine" does not equal "legitimate". And it just does not seem a great strategy for a state broadcaster...
