March 2027: Oxford World's Classics edition of Pierce Egan's "Life in London" (1821) will be published. First modern, annotated edition of a novel that defined the age. In this plate by the Cruikshank brothers, the chums get in a fight & Egan has his notebook nicked. global.oup.com/academic/pro...

some #bars2026 highlights, as promised. Overall, an incredible conference. In general, everyone was so kind & generous with their time & conversation. Despite a precarious job market, ECR work was the highest standard I've witnessed, & there was a deep, comforting community spirit amongst us.
Last week also marked the end of my tenure on the BARS Exec (@bars.bsky.social), first as PGR (2022-24) and then ECR Officer (2024-26). These roles were a highlight of (and outlasted) my PhD, offering essential experience in conference organisation (tbt #BARS2023), mentoring, networking, and more /1
Fabulous few days in Birmingham for #BARS2026 (in person) with friends old and new. So many fantastic panels and a pleasure to present research from my new project on Bentley’s Standard Novels. Thanks to all who came along and offered feedback. Roll on next Thursday for the online day!
Pleased to see this piece published in @theconversation.com yesterday. Thoughts I’ve had for a while made timely by our #NationalYearofReading: theconversation.com/from-moral-d... @uofgartshums.bsky.social
From moral decay to pure escapism: how attitudes to reading have changed over three centuries
Getting lost in a book is now regarded as an enriching experience – but a few hundred years ago, reading novels was considered a corrupting force.
