As far as I'm concerned, this is canon.
I still love the theory a Year 6 child proposed to me that David Attenborough is actually God and he got fed up with people not noticing the amazing things he'd created, so he made documentaries to show off.

The last 3 years have been the hottest in around 125,000 years. CO2 levels are their highest in MILLIONS of years. But most people have no idea this is happening, let alone what it means for our kids’ futures. Our politics & media have failed our children. We should be furious.
Oh, so now we are co-opting mathematics? I think not.
Still feel like "Musk and his crew of incels destroyed a bunch of stuff they didn't understand and thereby hastened the deaths of millions of children" did not get the public attention it warranted.

Political appointees wanted a quiet drawdown, the whistleblower says. DOGE wanted an execution.

You can't... repeal... a scientific finding. At that point it's just called lying about it.
Breaking News: The Trump administration repealed the bedrock scientific finding that greenhouse gases threaten human life and well being, meaning that the EPA can no longer regulate them. nyti.ms/4rSszQu
What a beauty!
This female lemon shark graced us with three great passes this afternoon. We couldn’t figure out which to feature, so here’s all three. In this US case-control study, from 2015-2020, of about 16,000 kids with acute respiratory illness presenting for care, receiving at least 1 dose of flu vaccine was associated with a >50% reduction in flu-associated pediatric ED visits or hospitalizations 💪💉💪 jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

I'm sure they're claiming the vaccine "doesn't work" because it only reduces hospitalizations by 40%.

Another example of the most basic fisheries management success. Reduce F, in this case to essentially zero, and SSB will increase. Sometimes it takes longer than we'd like, but lots of good ecology research happens in the meantime.
So everyone knows that northern cod collapsed completely in the 1980s and never recovered. Well... it's actually kind of recovering now. Spawning biomass is at pretty good levels, while catches remain at a tiny fraction of the heyday levels. publications.gc.ca/collections/...
In a study following 23 million people age 18-59 (pretty young) for 4 years…despite the fact that the ones who got the COVID vaccine were overall older and sicker at baseline, they not only had 74% lower risk of dying from COVID than the unvaccinated but 25% lower risk of dying from any other cause!

2025 will end up as the warmest year by a substantial 0.8°F margin in #Albuquerque. The last time the record high was broken by a larger margin was 1950. Important difference: in 1950 there were 57 years in the historical record to compete against... in 2025 there were 132 years to compete against.
Much to my children's dismay, turns out I'm pretty good at catching little fish (they just want BIG ones)! Like this Tobaccofish, Serranus tabacarius, a beautiful small Serranid, or basslet. Caught 12/30 in the Florida Keys on a sabiki rig.
Out: virtue signaling. In: Vice signaling!
we all got cowed into avoiding "virtue signaling" as if the public affirmation of socially agreed upon ethical principles was somehow cringey instead of a significant part of what a "society" even is. now all there's left is vice signaling, and it's reshaping society.
My 6yo and I played the closest possible game of Sorry today. He (yellow) pulled the 3 to go out. The next card was a 1.

Really starting to feel more and more like we scientists are just rearranging deck chairs.
My teen, who had dreamt of being an astrophysicist, just told me he wants to go to law school because, “Science isn’t going to be a priority in the US in the future…I don’t want a job where I’ll be constantly worried my funding will be taken away.” Gutting. How many future scientists have we lost?
This was the same justification used to authorize the Juvenile Goliath Grouper harvest, too. That one just never made it to court where they had to admit it publicly.

A Florida bear hunt is a sad and pathetic thing. It's a blight on the wildlife commission that approved it and lied about bear populations in the state, which are on the decline due to massive and unwise clearcutting for development. DeSantis and the Repubs in charge are sacks of shit.

Can confirm. Targeting sunfish is a lot of fun, especially with kids.
Fishing for sunfish is one of the simplest & most fun forms of angling, especially with a fly rod. I love summer evenings on the local pond, casting ants to bluegills. And chasing new sunfish species when I travel. #25DaysofFishmas
Travel from the comfort of your own home this #25DaysofFishmas as we explore fishes from all across the US each day in December. Best part? No sleeping on air mattresses in guest rooms! The road trip kicks off with fishes from the southeastern US on Monday Dec. 1!
