In my opinion, it was laughable when the rejoinder authors said "dark" was ok to use when done responsibly. Like half the literature is built around using it sensationally. E.g., "The dark side of the rainbow: Homosexuals and bisexuals have higher Dark Triad traits than heterosexuals." Lol - gtfo.

Opposition to this term isn't some pearl-clutching attempt to 'cancel' a naughty word that offends delicate sensibilities. It's a pragmatic push to be rid of an absurd phrase that undermines the goals of a serious area of psychological science and can harm those it attempts to describe.

Our faculty senate, although populated by earnest and capable faculty, is frustratingly weak. It is an impotent body. It plays an "advisory role" to an administration that is going to do whatever it pleases. It's play-acting faculty governance.

Upgraded my stereo system (on a three year plan). Replaced my 20 year old Onkyo receiver and added a subwoofer. Two very good moves. I wish I had added the subwoofer years ago.

The final shipment of holiday vinyl--Amos Lee's self-titled album. I have others to work through, but I let this one jump the line. Definitely a jazz temperament. His voice is rich and warm. The sound is relaxed. Tres hip. Another pretty darn good debut album.

I did not know that being opposed to data fabrication and bad science made me woke, but so be it. I guess I am more radical than I thought.

Finally wrestled Horace Silver off the turntable. Replaced him with another gift from my jazz friend: Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster on Verve (who also have a cool catalog). I’ve been looking for an entry point to Mulligan—not easy with jazz artists who have, where long careers and huge catalogs.

Back to jazz. Another X-mas gift. This one from one of my oldest friends who knows his jazz and my tastes. The Horace Silver quintet and trio--Blowin' the Blues Away. Upon first listen, I like it a lot. Silver is a very good pianist and one of greatest jazz composers.

For fellow instant ramen fans.

Final spin of the evening. I'll listen to it 3 or 4 more times, but it is that last one tonight. Another great, recent acquisition--MJ Linderman's Boat Songs. Coherent. Lo fi sonics. Hi fi songwriting. Take it around the harbor once or twice.

Another really good album from Jeffrey Foucault. He writes great songs and I love his voice. It pairs really well with English Premier League football on the first day of the year, but I think it is pretty good any damn day of the year.

This is one of the greatest debut albums ever--Iris DeMent's Infamous Angel. Life, love, loss. John Prine wrote: "So listen to this music, this Iris DeMent. It's good for you." You should listen to John Prine. Give her a spin.

I am rewatching The Residence, but it is Patterson's first time. I am super excited for him.

Another great album from 2025 and one of my favorite Bonny Prince Billy albums--Purple Bird. Solid, coherent alt-country spine. Consistently good from A to Z. It is great lyrically--more understated than some previous work. His voice is cracked, vulnerable, but solid. This is a really good album.
