Writer, naturalist, medievalist, teacher. Trustee of Curlew Action. The Cuckoo’s Lea, Bloomsbury, out now. At work on a new book about winter: Hibernal. Marshes. Winter. Whisky. https://linktr.ee/cuckooslea www.birdsandplace.co.uk
Thrilled to pieces to be shortlisted @wainwrightprize.bsky.social! My quirky fusion of a book & its delightful & opinionated ghosts (human, wild & otherwise) revisiting the points in recent wildlife & rural history where we could have taken different paths, why we didn’t, & what we do now!
If there’s one outcome I wanted for #TheCuckoosLea it’s that it will bring greater attention to the heritage of our ancient place-names which include a lot of nature! Making @wainwrightprize.bsky.social’s shortlist this year is validation of that aim. #naturewriting #PlaceNames #WainwrightPrize
Thrilled to have made @wainwrightprize.bsky.social’s 2026 SHORTLIST! Congrats to my fellow nature writing category nominees, incl. @lucylapwing.bsky.social @nicolawriting.bsky.social. #naturewriting #WainwrightPrize #StoriesThatConnect

Yesterday, my brilliant friend @amyabdelnoor.bsky.social published her debut novel, Everland, about two girls, 33 years apart, dealing with the ongoing horror of the occupation in Palestine. Deep empathy with others through the power of fiction. Buy and read! uk.bookshop.org/p/books/ever...

I’ve just finished this book. I didn’t want it to end, fascinating read.
This morning’s visitor. Had them as flyovers before but not actually IN our garden! Was very interested in the upturned bucket, which it kept tapping. #greenwoodpecker #gardenbirds #naturewriting
This is clever. Very emotive way of showing our losses. And it’s pointed that such a brief chronology, just 50 years, is not a time frame in which most of us can distinguish the gradual losses, marked as they are. #naturewriting www.theguardian.com/environment/...

With Melissa Harrison last night @thebookery.bsky.social in Crediton, talking about her latest novel, The Given World. Do yourself a favour this summer: buy and read this book! It’s so tender and profound, with one of the most heartachingly beautiful endings of any book I know. #naturewriting
It was inevitable, wasn't it🙄 Of course the Telegraph would run with something like this👇 So let's remove some of the rose-tinted spectacles and also look at some of that data comparing 1976 with modern heat waves Because the 1976 nostalgia porn is wearing a bit thin at this stage 🧵1/23
