an arcade game where pickups give you more points based on complex mathematical formulae while you're dodging bullets or whatever. an arcade game where when you take damage there's a secret rule that determines whether it does extra damage or illusory fake damage that does nothing. an arcade game wh

another book i really love, Ugly Feelings, is also a book that seeks to define a number of concrete/discrete large concepts in a loose way, with no aspirations to deliver straightforward conclusions about them, via analysis of a large number of artworks. my absolute favourite genre of book maybe???

after some months of reading The Impossible Reversal slow (and a few days fast) i find that i'm suddenly finished! learned a lot more about fluxus, and the book lays out four really interesting kinds of 'play' that i will be thinking about for at least a little while, perhaps longer. it's great.

i'm especially interested in instances from historical records of casual conversation: podcasts, commentary, forum threads? anywhere the actual word "gameplay" is arguably being used to refer to an individual instance of a game being played or something like that

is there any precedent for the existence of subjective gameplay? all usages of the word that sound familiar to me are like "the gameplay" (belongs to the object), there's no e.g. "the gameplay i experienced" (belongs to the player experience)

something that is kinda cool about social media quantification of engagement as score is that people are pretty incentivized to be publicly wrong about things? some consequences of this exist, but being wrong is a great joy and good learning opportunity. i am ready to be wrong about some big things.

Controversial videogame dislike: I hate when games have ‘dice rolls’ involved. If I wanted to be totally out of control of my own life I would not have opted for the designers’ hand for a tenner

reading a paper looking for inconsistencies and details is kind of similar to the search one does in a sudoku puzzle, but sudoku answers are very neatly constrained & come with a specified output format. reading a paper closely i can feel my lack of notion of how organization and completion *look*.

here's how you play my new videogame "photograph of a complete sudoku" 1 get sudoku puzzle (any) 2 get sheet of paper 3 draw grid 3 copy puzzle by hand onto sheet of paper with grid 4 solve puzzle by hand on sheet of paper 5 take photograph of completed puzzle and not original 6 send photo online

if you have ever uttered or heard the phrase 'death of the author' i strongly recommend reading the original text, it's only a few pages long (6-7, depending on translation) sometimes these concepts get headlined due to accessibility but for this one it's really very easy to read the full thing

sometimes it takes watching someone else say things i don't like in a way that i don't like to inspire me to say things i do like in better ways, maybe i'm going to kill gameplay again but with less bullshit

update: i stopped enjoying this video once the arguments started to become internally inconsistent! still some interesting game bits being identified, but for a nicely-edited video like this, i would expect a higher clarity of concept

www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuBI... enjoying this video, will finish and maybe have more thoughts but at 8:28 he says "If you play 10 different platformers in a row, do you really want to remember an arbitrary amount of coyote time for each one[..]?" and like, yes??? why else would you play a platformer
