On a random note, but relevant to AI things going on, I wholly recommend watching Pantheon. It's from a couple years ago, but it's been a while since I've seen something so thought-provoking, poignant, and terrifying, all in an animated adventure of sorts. Start to finish, it is really outstanding.

This is why I am VERY VERY VERY PICKY about the half marathons I choose to run. Though, I don't know, this might be exactly the half marathon that @flscitriguy.bsky.social prefers! pix11.com/news/local-n...

Let me tell you, of all the absolute bangers by Taylor Alison Swift that I have gained a VAST new appreciation for over the last 6 weeks ... nothing hits quite like that absolute boss challenging people to "Try and come for my job." Perfection. No fucking notes.
What an absolute and utter JOY it was to kick off our seminar series with @eisch.bsky.social! An absolutely amazing scientist, delightful human, and enthusiastic supporter of all things. If she's not on your seminar list, you need to put here there! Thanks for making the journey over the river. :)
Welp. I didn't expect a run through southwest Philly to be a visual representation of my life. #cityrunner
Attention Philadelphia! We're hosting a rally to demand that Drexel University maintain The Academy of Natural Sciences Museum open to the public. Join us on Tuesday morning at 10am in front of the academy. Please spread the word, we need all hands on deck! RSVP here: luma.com/1qwnrqz2
Do the climb first, they said. It'll be great, they said. Let me be very clear. FUCK them. I guess I'm putting the labor in Labor Day.
As I was doing one of those university re-trainings and entering "n/a" in one of the response fields, I realized that my phone inherently autocorrects "n/a" to "nachos" and thought that there was nothing more on brand for me than that ...
Sometimes, you just have to take yourself out. But in a nice way - not, you know, with a sniper rifle.
OK #Neuroscience friends. I'm teaching a grad course on New Topics in Neuroscience. What are you reading these days that excites you? Students for this class have backgrounds in theoretical Neuro, math, engineering, biochem, physiology, pharmacy, & more.
Who says you can't run away from your problems?! And August had a LOT of problems, let me tell you.
This was quite a surprise. What started as a little humblebrag with a (now) obscure Jeb Bush joke thrown in for gigs and shittles showed me there are still many kind people out there. Thanks for supporting my stupid gym photo, world. That's very heartwarming. You're all heartwarming.
Tiny update: Yes. It's a stupid gym photo. But I've worked very hard, lost over 30 pounds in the last year, lifted a lot, ran a lot, and now I can do 10+ (weighted) pull-ups in a session now. So ... please clap.

Today was a lot of fun. I did the 8.5 mile loop of Valley Forge National Park. Mt. Misery kicked my ass, but it was a nice time out in nature thinking about the next 3 lab papers. Not pictured: the small DQ blizzard I inhaled after finishing.

(And yes, I am ignoring the news about Tim Curry today because there's only so much sadness one man can be expected to absorb in a month. And I've more than surpassed my fill.)
In this world, you either die or you live long enough to become the thing you hate. I just bought two new shirts from Vineyard Vines, so I invite you to determine which one has happened.
What an utter joy this was. Thanks to my science brother @vonhofflab.bsky.social for hosting me and setting up such wonderful meetings and discussions!!
Thank you so much Tim @drosophilosophy.bsky.social for an amazing talk and a thought-provoking discussion. May Drosophila Neuro research live forever!
Visiting our neighbors, @vonhofflab.bsky.social to the slightly southwest today for some seminar excitement! Really stoked to be here! Also, apparently, it's orientation so who knows, I might join a new extracurricular!
Invented a corn, mozzarella, and crouton soup tonight. Everything about my life is pretty much the worst ever, but this soup was pretty solid.
Well, at least the humidity in my office is currently manageable! 🤦♂️
You know, a sidewalk has never made me sob uncontrollably before. But here we are. Happy Saturday, erebody.
Our lab published a JoVE video article covering the CaMPARI technique to study synaptic connections in developing Drosophila. Here’s a quick preview! Full video & article: hubs.ly/Q04s6ZWx0 Journal of Visualized Experiments ( #JoVE ) #neurociencia #scientificcommunication #neuroscience #UMBC
It's happening!!! Let's see if it's as good as I remember.
When the locals tell you to go to a bakery, but be warned there's a line ... you don't need to know anything else. You. Just. Fucking. Go.
Contentedness, thy name is lobster roll. ;)
Salt air ... and the rust on your door. I feel like if one is on the RI coast in August, you can listen to nothing other than TSwift.
Super excited to be hanging out at the mothership today! Just a little NIH seminar with some dear friends in the Drosophila Neurobiology Interest Group. :)
