Detained immigration court is the black box of the whole system. Hearings are civil proceedings, but they take place inside an ICE facility where few people have access. I sat down with the University of Denver team that documents one of those courtrooms in Aurora.

It was a somber day, waking up to find out that Glen Hansard had died from a motorcycle accident last night. I was a long-time fan, so I decided to write about him and what he meant to me. #GlenHansard #Hansard #Dublin #Piano #Restoration

Music has a way of speaking to us when words don’t seem enough. I woke up early this Wednesday morning and was confronted by the news of Glen Hansard’s passing. I couldn’t help but think about his “This Wild Willing Tour” stop at The Paramount in Denver, CO (2019). I had 1st row center seats, so he literally performed 6' from me all night. At one point he sang full a cappella, and people were weeping. He wasn’t afraid to bare his soul, and we bore witness to it that night. IIRC, he had recently sung at a friend's funeral, and in between songs he reflected upon the experience; you could literally hear a pin drop. He had “it.”

I found Hansard’s music during a pivotal time in my life; his raw emotional storytelling helped me re-connect with music once the ache for creativity became louder than the comfort of a steady paycheck. I was classically trained (piano) from a young age, and I had thoughts of a career in music, but practicality won out like it does for most people. My first non-profit at 19 and first start-up at 20; I thought I had it all until I didn’t. Time passed quickly, and my dreams became memories of an optimist, not fit for the rigors of life back then.

I picked up my first salvaged piano around the time I discovered Glen's music circa 2005. I was a first year thriving in my training program but starving for a creative outlet; getting out of my head was so much harder since I had stopped playing. YouTube had recently launched, so there wasn't much on piano restoration, so I picked up knowledge from some cabinetry channels. I bought a couple of piano restoration books off of Amazon, and over the next few years I restored a turn of the century upright grand (~1907) that had previously sailed around the world on a cruise ship. It had spent the last 20 years in a musician’s home, waiting to be appreciated again. Some things can take decades to find and only seconds to lose.

There were so many layers of paint, each telling a story, most of which were lost to time. As I stripped the decades of paint away in a makeshift garage workshop, I thought about the music made and memories lost at sea. Buoys exist to light the way, often lonely and solitary, but signaling a path for those lost. In many ways, Hansard was that for many of us. There was an army green paint hidden under a white paint that I never could quite figure out. Who would do that to such a beautiful instrument? Then I realized the scars and wear marks were from a life well lived. My first salvaged piano reminded me of The Horse, a beaten and battered acoustic guitar Glen used during his time with the Frames, The Swell Season, and then into his solo career. I can only imagine the stories The Horse could tell, every scratch a memory and every dent a moment lost in time. The Horse was ridden hard, and gave of itself because that’s what it was made to do.

Glen squeezed a lot of life out of his 56 years, but I wish there were more years for him and his family, and selfishly, for me. That first salvaged piano never had a chance to reach its final form because I had to move because life marches on. I had shaved down the hammers, reshaped the dampers, and I was in the process of finishing the action on the last few keys when I found a musician who wanted to buy it for an upcoming album. The ivory keys were still in a bag, worn from intentions of countless muscians who came before. I wanted to finish what I had started, but the buyer wanted the piano as-is because it was uniquely imperfect. I never did find out how the album turned out, but maybe I wasn’t meant to have that closure because life often isn’t fair. Glen’s loss is going to sting for a while, but he left behind a legacy that will live on, and there is a small bit of solace in that thought. I don’t know what happened to The Horse either, but music has a way of finding a way, so maybe it found it’s place in the universe too, just like Glen.

Devastated about Glen Hansard’s death. From his 2019 Denver, CO. I had 1st row orchestra. One of the best shows I’ve ever attended. During a dirge, the crowd was weeping bc he expressed a pain that cut to the bone. RIP Glen.
