Reaching out for aid in Gaza became our only necessity to protect our 2 kids. As a pharmacist & lawyer who lost everything, 3 years without income ruined our lives. Securing basic food, medicine, & essential care for our son & daughter is brutal. Vetted by Molly Shah ✅ tinyurl.com/4rycmjm5

NEW: For @indiewire.com, I spoke to Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor, Jamie Selkirk and *many* more for an oral history of The Frighteners as it turns 30. Specifically, how the commercial flop drove innovation at Wētā, paved the way for The Lord of the Rings, and was just a whole lot of fun to make.

Peter Jackson and more reflect on 'The Frighteners,' their first Hollywood film, and the growth of Wētā for its 30th anniversary. Oral history.

My friend @lexluddy.xyz is struggling right now with the death of her dad. She could use all the hugs you have to spare. 💕🫂 Her dad's request was that folks donate to Médecins Sans Frontières' continued vital work in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, and Egypt She'd really appreciate both. 🩷

One of the first uses of Victor Stone/Cyborg's powers in Zack Snyder's Justice League is lifting a single mother out of poverty by manipulating the United States banking network, which is arguably the most heroic deed to be found in a superhero film. Whereas:

started watching the bakshi directed seasons of the 60s spiderman cartoon & every so often there will just be a killer shot someone managed to throw their whole pussy into despite all the production limitations

Peter Parker, doused in shadow, at the docks at night. he is leaning on his knee and looking out into the water. the docks and sky are rendered with cool tones of green, blue, and violet in watercolor

In that context, present day MCU Spidey functions similarly for both the police and the (insane) surveillance state that individuals are expected to buy into as consumers (Ring cams, etc.). Don’t feel bad about the horrible things we’re doing - after all it’s your pal Spider-Man who’s part of it!

There’s an interesting part in the Chapo Trap House 9/11 retrospective where they talk about the Avengers movies as the enduring legacy of post-9/11 militarism - yes, we’re doing any number of awful things, but the people doing them are your adorkable pals!

This is 100% correct and I do think there’s something to say about Iron Man having embodied a kind of Obama era tech Utopianism that has kind of been uncritically transferred to Peter, whose response to various monstrous Tony inventions is basically “lol sure why not.”

grimly funny that in The Dark Knight, Batman’s city-wide surveillance is the moral crucible, the point at which he has clearly gone too far, while in Brand New Day it’s just something that Spider-Man does.

“You’re a huge fan of Lord of the Rings, how come you don’t like Palantir?” “You’re a huge fan of 1984, how come you don’t like the surveillance state?” “You’re a huge fan of Fahrenheit 451, how come you don’t like ritual book burnings?”

Every now and then someone takes a run at me along the lines of "I don't understand why you, a scifi writer, don't appreciate 'AI'," and I'm all, motherfucker, it's *because* I'm a science fiction writer I have the positions I have, how many times do we have to fucking yell "torment nexus," my dude

I am so excited for there to be 3 different, unrelated movies called "Bad Lieutenant" where the only throughline is that they're about A Cop who Smokes Crack directed by the patron saints of Mentally Ill Guy filmmaking
