i led a deep listening hike this morning, threaded through with sonic meditations from pauline oliveros. at the end, one of the participants said he heard the sound of a single pine needle hitting the ground for the very first time. maybe one of the best compliments i’ve received as an educator 🥹

this article is a few things: it outlines what i mean by palliative political ecology; it's processing grief through writing (and sharing it); and it's an attempt to write in a way that ai cannot (easily) replicate. i am proud to share it! liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/doi/10.3828/...

new! this article is the result of several conversations, tons of effort and time, and deep reflections about my-and our-relationship to the political economy of higher ed. student debt shouldn't exist, and college should be free ✊ @dialogueshg.bsky.social journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
it's me, some faculty in Colorado pushing back ✊

happy to have a small part/quote in this hugely important conversation. ai is just the most recent shiny object the neoliberal university is using to gut higher ed’s mission as a social, public good. cutting educators and researchers is not the way 👎🏻 www.insidehighered.com/news/tech-in...

Accumulation by transition or genuine transformation? Speculative political ecologies of Central Appalachia’s emerging forest carbon economy - Dylan M. Harris, 2025

new article! how might the emergence of the 'new' carbon economy be disrupted, shifted in favor of communities rather than serving as another round of capitalist accumulation? thanks to @landpolicy.bsky.social for supporting this work! here's a link: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
saw the new tron, and my takeaway is that ai-death likely won’t be explosive and shiny. instead, it’ll be slow violence. enough humans will be convinced its existence is more worthwhile than planetary health (happening), and ai chat bots will convince kids to kill themselves (happening).
what does it mean that small landowners are being asked to lease their land, or at least the carbon inside their trees, to corporations like amazon for 20-year contracts? i am super excited to share this work and grateful to the @landpolicy.bsky.social for supporting it! ✊ tinyurl.com/mw2zx9fe

what does it meant to affirm life, to ease suffering, when there is no cure? what does grief teach about the art of life, about solidarity despite devastation? is grief a lens through which to assuage planetary harm? thanks to the @carsoncenter.bsky.social 🌱 seeingthewoods.org/2025/09/02/l...
Is #grief inherently political? In this deeply personal essay author @dylanmharris.bsky.social explores the connections between global #foodproduction and the health—and related grief—of the individual. This essay is a contribution to the #planetaryhealth series featured on 𝘚𝘦𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘴.
research funding cuts will impact whole universities, but, importantly, those costs are going to be passed onto our most vulnerable colleagues and our students through tuition increases. it's time to organize WITH - not against - your students to fight these cuts. ✊ @debtcollective.bsky.social
just gave a talk on palliative political ecology to a church that recently voted to become a ‘creation justice’ congregation, and you could feel tendrils of solidarity forming between folks. the way forward is community. 🌱✊🏻
my nature/society course, at its heart, is about understanding how the seemingly intractable, primordial division between humans and nature informs so much of the binary thinking that informs (and inflames) so much of society.

four days into the semester, i have seen universities, not just mine, 'get in line' with what is 'coming down the pipeline' rather than standing on their mission, to educate all, with integrity. this timely @aaup.bsky.social report is a critical read. ✊ www.aaup.org/report/again...

while the end of the semester is always busy, it is my favorite for final projects, which, this year, have included: a personal piano concert of studio ghibli songs, a handmade bleaching coral reef made from recycled fabric, and a student writing a poem they yodeled from a mountain top on video 😀
Staggering growth of US oil & gas production and record profits was sold by GOP and Dem presidents as American “energy security”. But this isn’t security for ordinary people. Dividends flow to the 1% as more households struggle with utility bills. New paper by @isabellamweber.bsky.social + coauthors
NEW PAPER: The 2022 fossil fuel price jumps caused an oil and gas profit explosion. We show the US reaped the largest profit increase (USD 275bn) of any country. Big Oil claims this benefits the American people. In fact, 51% went to the richest 1%, only 1% to the bottom 50%. A 🧵
