To me, the foundational tension of modern AI is this: If the stated goal is to create a human-level intelligence that can replace human workers but lacks human rights, then the real aspiration is slavery; but if human-level intelligence is impossible, then the industry's stated goal is a lie.

Anyone prog/left reading this live in Tucson AZ? How do you feel about it? I’ve lived near Allentown PA for 50 years. Few (now 0) friends, fewer romantic relationships. Dating sites/meetup make my region seem devoid of my kind of people. Deathly lonely. ExGF thinks I’d be better off in Tucson.

Every night I hope to die spontaneously in my sleep, so I don’t have to keep feeling my life go by without escape from this place and without any way to find a life partner. It’s too late; too far along. I don’t want to risk making it worse by trying to end it & failing, or hurting the few who care.

The loneliness & isolation is unbearable. I’m going to die alone. Every time I commit, they abandon me. No one commits. No one stays, despite telling me I’m handsome, intelligent, kind, and whatever else they tell me I am, to make it sound like I’ll find someone new, like they did. I am finished.

Science is built on a foundation of hundreds of papers. If the removal of a single paper from that foundation completely upsets your hypothesis, it often means you’re sciencing incorrectly. He has so little evidence for his claims that he has to cling to this paper and fight tooth and nail.

This whole thread, up to within hours ago, over days, is a feat of human compassion and benevolence. It’s what we should strive for—just, help something or someone else feel safe if they’re vulnerable. Nature is harsh and cruel and we somehow developed kindness to help make life worth living.
