We are a bookstore -- a good one, we think! -- selling new books -- good ones, we hope! -- in Oakland, California.

Another anniversary of the fire passed yesterday. It's funny, we now don't think about it all that much. Far less than many customers, in fact. The human brain, given time, is inclined, to a point, to heal. Resolve and general stubbornness may yet be some of the greatest tools in our toolkit.

By far the funniest moment in Homer’s Odyssey is when Circe says, “Shall we have sex?” and Odysseus says, “You just turned all my men into pigs. You have the GALL to think I would sleep with you? Of course I will. Absolutely. But don’t do any weird spells”

photograph of the relevant passage in Fitzgerald's translation of the Odyssey ("I make no bed of love with you upon it. Or swear me first a great oath, if I do, you'll work no more enchantment to my harm.")

Rose Horowitch recently published a piece in the ATLANTIC MONTHLY that made a bit of noise online about “the end of reading.” I didn’t think I had a lot to say about it until I was actually asked. I thought I’d share a portion of my response.

For those counting that's now FOUR national book banning bills that are moving their way through. This one seems to be a senate companion to 7661 (much of the same language). Call the senate re: 2616 and 4925, call the house re: 8705, 7661 And as always, fuck censorship 📚

NEW: A federal book banning bill has been introduced in the Senate. It's time to make our voices heard. Tell your Senators to REJECT pro-censorship legislation like S. 4925 that would limit the freedom to read! We need every advocate to speak out against censorship: action.ala.org/campaign/S4925

Operational note for this weekend: we are open throughout, including July 4th, our normal hours. We encourage everybody to celebrate the holiday with *apparently* un-American behavior like empathy, curiosity, and humility in the face of human and non-human complexity, possibility, and finitude.

A lot of social media posts (pro and con) about Amazon this week. You can certainly divine our feelings. Amidst the tumult, I esp. like Emily West's BUY NOW for its analysis from the perspective of a media studies scholar. ebbooksellers.com/item/Jt0yuxc...
