👕 It might just look like yet another silly season story. But the furore over Andy Burnham's casual-wear actually tells you rather a lot about the architecture of the economy around us, and the profound challenges facing anyone wanting to change it👇 edconway.substack.com/p/what-andy-...

What Andy Burnham's £80 T-shirt really tells us

This isn't just a story about expensive clothes. It's about where things are made, about why you can't really trust what it says on the label and about what happens after the "end of geography"

The Most Important Trainer You've Never Heard Of

This is the story of how an obscure sneaker that didn't even carry the logo of the company that made it, helped to change the world - in ways we're still reckoning with even today...

A very good read. Particularly resonates with my area of chip design. I met some missile makers at a trade show recently and they saw my deterministic CPU design and said “good, we aren’t allowed to use software because of this, we have to use FPGAs”. But the UK doesn’t make FPGAs.

✍️A TNT shortage, a world at war and why an obscure factory next to a Sheffield fast fashion warehouse could help explain how to reindustrialise Britain. An essay on the new Chancellor, the old Chancellor and whether anyone can actually turn our economy around👇 edconway.substack.com/p/the-factor...

The number of global economic inter-dependencies is probably close to infinite. Individual ones may provoke panic in particular countries at particular times, but self-sufficiency doesn't work either, and governments have a poor record of predicting what will be crucial.
