So... I got more information about this plan. The most important points follow on the next posts. 1/3
I heard from several sources yesterday that NIH is planning to release a Request for Information (RFI) that apparently will include this: Scores and percentiles for NIH grant applications will not be shared with applicants although they will be provided to NIH program officers and staff. 1/3
This hit home. I found NIDDK to be particularly strict in this regard.
“Units of the NIH are privately directing grantees to request permission in advance for any co-authorship with a scholar affiliated with a foreign institution, even if all the work was done in the United States.” Grantees also told to remove papers with foreign authors from progress reports.
🚨🧪🧵URGENT INPUT NEEDED: NIH asks input for next strategic plan-including emphasis on non-animal models (NAMs) to replace animals. Per NIH insider, anti-animal responses now outnumber scientists 200-700x. Please please provide input. Deadline: May 26, 11:59 PM ET. grants.nih.gov/news-events/...

I don’t know how to feel about grant rejections anymore. When you get a score that would have been funded at any other point in history, except right now, how bad can you feel? I see scores from friends and colleagues (and my own) and it just breaks my heart more than anything.

“Our survey of the gender equality initiatives in place showed that encouragement and awareness-raising practices alone have had limited impact. In most organisations, gender equality measures lack dedicated structures, formal mandates, budgets or monitoring mechanisms.”
Most scientific orgs have open & merit-based nomination, election & awarding procedures. But in 90% of academies surveyed, nomination relies on existing members. When membership is already predominantly male, such procedures perpetuate existing imbalances. theconversation.com/women-in-sci...

Here’s a quick way to make sure that your elected representatives know to NOT to support multiyear NIH funding which will significantly reduce the number of new grants supported each year.
As Congress finalizes FY 2026 appropriations bills, lawmakers need to hear from scientists about the importance of supporting a strong budget for NIH. Let your reps know why NIH funding is important to you: https://ow.ly/aOCO50Y0ioG #advocacy #SciPol #FundScience 🧪 📷: iStock
