I’ve officially resigned as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience. It used to be a reputable journal, but became a case study in how forced automation destroys academic integrity. 👇

Interesting article on something I think is very relevant to open science: several teams analyzed the same ephys dataset and got quite different answers. Not because the analyses were bad, but because this kind of work involves many analysis choices, and those choices can change the result.

Differences stemmed from the way researchers defined concepts, to the algorithms they used to analyze the data, to the parameters they employed when implementing the algorithms, note @mattiachini.bsky.social and Gaelle Chapuis. #neuroskyence www.thetransmitter.org/reproducibil...

Someone asked me what makes us, humans, special. We were talking about the brain. I keep thinking about it, but so far the only special thing about us I could come up with is that we are the only animals who think they are special.

🧪 1/ Our review “The 3-Body Problem: How Astrocytes May Govern Plasticity” is now out in The Neuroscientist. We explore the idea that astrocytes help determine when & where synaptic plasticity is permitted, reframing the credit assignment problem in biological circuits. doi.org/10.1177/1073...

The 3-Body Problem: How Astrocytes May Govern Plasticity - Airi Watanabe, Connie Guo, P. Jesper Sjöström, 2026

Learning and memory were long thought to be the domains of neurons and neural networks, but recent work across brain systems has established that astrocytes pla...

As part of this effort, we've just released three new atlases from v2 of the Allen mouse CCF - the brain atlas, fiber tract atlas and developmental brain atlas. Most pipelines have moved to CCFv3, but adding v2 allows atlas comparison and reproducing old analyses. brainglobe.info/blog/ccfv2-a...

We've started an effort to bring every 3D (non-human) anatomical atlas that exists into BrainGlobe. Get in touch if there's an atlas we've missed, or you think there's a specific atlas we should prioritise. Read more in our blog: brainglobe.info/blog/the-sys...

How does #vision shape spatial maps in the hippocampus? Check out our brand new preprint 👇 As someone who did a PhD on the #hippocampus & postdoc on visual cortex and superior colliculus, it's such a joy to start closing the loop - especially with such a great team! 😊
