In the 1920s, while the world was reading the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Virginia Woolf, Erich Maria Remarque, Ukrainian writers were building their own literary renaissance. By 1938, most of them had been arrested, imprisoned, or killed. 🧵
August 5, 1937. On this day, NKVD Order No. 00447 came into force. It authorised the arrest and execution of "anti-Soviet elements". Within two years, it had claimed approximately 700,000 lives across the Soviet Union.
On Nov 3, 1937, in a forest in Karelia, the NKVD shot at least 12 of Ukraine's leading writers and artists in a single night. Today, Russia spreads disinformation about the Sandarmokh forest, claiming the graves hold Soviet POWs killed by Finland—not victims of Stalin's terror.
On April 17, 1938, in Akmesdzhyt (Simferopol), a Soviet military court sentenced 36 of them to death in a single sitting. Six years later, Stalin deported the entire Crimean Tatar nation from the peninsula. Historians call the 1938 executions its preamble.
